Advisory Committee to the Business Honors Program
Meeting Notes for June 14, 2003 Meeting
10:00 AM CST
I. Welcome-Robin and Andrew
New Members: Scott Packman (’90) and Dominic Sung (’03)
II. Program Update - Dr. Cox
-Admissions: see information below
-Doenges Award winner: Ty Cobb. 4 outstanding students awards also given this year
-Make A Mark Scholarship will receive matching funds in August, making it a fully endowed presidential
scholarship
-Mitte Foundation
The spilt between the business school and the Mitte Foundation is setback, but more of a loss of opportunity for
hundreds of students. It would have hurt the program much more if this split would have happened 2 years down
the road when we would have already been receiving the funds and would have to do without. The loss of the $10
million dollar gift combined with matching funds of $4 million from the Red McCombs gift will mean a loss of
$375K a year in scholarship dollars and $90K a year in operating income. There is not much to tell beyond what
was found in the paper, but here are some of the facts:
-the BHP submitted all scholarship applications to the foundation in early March and were told we would
have them returned in 2 weeks
-5 weeks later we received only the freshmen recipients, but no upperclassmen
-in May, the Mitte Foundation called a meeting with Dean Gau here at UT; Dean Gau rescheduled for a few
weeks later at the Mitte Foundation. At that meeting were Dean Gau, Scott Mitte, Sheryl Nolting, Joann Mitte,
and the Mitte Foundation lawyer.
- Scott Mitte has settled 4 sexual harassment cases out of court
-Dean Gau was not comfortable with having Scott Mitte on campus
-The Mitte Foundation insisted on Scott working close with students on campus and in community service
projects
-the consensus in the meeting was that the AC members admired Dean Gau for his courage
III. Focus for AC for the future-see attached sheet
