Air suspension

Air suspension is becoming increasingly popular for premium and luxury vehicles, with nearly all the
major carmakers replacing all four steel spring systems on the corners with air springs. Features
that add value for customers include optimum ride height that is independent of vehicle load, which
can be achieved with a less complex rear axle air suspension. BMW has achieved this advancement
and decided to equip its new 5 Series Touring and Gran Turismo models with rear axle air suspension
as a standard feature. Electronic control unit and air supply unit for rear axle air suspension are standard equipment for the new BMW 5 Series Touring.
Automotive Industries (AI) asked Helge Westerkamp, a stronger suspension to be able to carry heavier payloads and not the load situation. These features can be realized with both the AI: What have been the major breakthrough achievements

AI: Let’s talk technology again – what is different about
your manufacturing processes?
Formanski: We are different to most of competitors in that
we start with the design of the fiber. Other companies buy in
the fiber and build their solutions around what is available in the
market-place. We do not design the fibers by ourselves, but work
closely with our customers to come up with a solution. We have
almost everything in-house, starting from foundation research to
prototyping to the production lines for producing high volumes of
textiles and metal components.
AI: How do you work with Tier 1 and other suppliers?
Formanski: We are very flexible, and set up the logistics line
to suit our customers. In some cases we deliver the materials to
the Tier 1 supplier, who then applies them to the parts. In others Cone insulation‚ “Integraldämmung” on SCR catalyst.
