Medically speaking, there is no "true cure" for this mental disorder, however, you can usually find

treatments for hoarding by doing a little research of your own. What I mean by no "true cure" is

that it will never completely go away. The compulsive hoarding disorder, if not addressed,

continues to worsen over the patient's lifetime. This person will probably enter into a life-long

struggle to get complete control of it. There are two common treatments, however, that are usually

applied in compulsive hoarding cases. These should allow the patient to effectively manage the

symptoms.

The first treatment of hoarding is with medication. Studies conducted by research laboratories

have shown positive results with antidepressant medications in compulsive hoarders who have

taken paroxetine (Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac), citalopram (Celexa), sertraline (Zoloft) and

fluvoxamine (Luvox). However, some case studies showed little or very mild improvement in

behavior while under the influence of these prescriptions. Their purpose is to raise the serotonin

activity in the brain. But, in general, when taking different types of obsessive-compulsive disorders

into consideration, people suffering from compulsive hoarding tend not to respond as well to

medicinal therapies.

Another type of treatment of hoarding that has shown to be effective in managing hoarding

behavior is cognitive-behavioral therapy. This process usually involves more than just counseling

the person to find the root cause of why they feel an overwhelming need to collect certain things.

This type of treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy, usually requires an in-home visit by the

therapist. Improvements in decision-making and instilling organizational skills are also addressed.

If the therapist is a successful, the hoarder will notice a dramatic improvement in their quality of life

and see how much space they actually have to live their life in.

The cognitive therapy treatment of hoarding will challenge those emotions within the patient which

support the hoarding and get them ready for the next phase of treatment which is the process of

de-cluttering. This phase will allow the person to sort through their items and eventually live in a

clean home. The entire house is not tackled all at once but rather one room at a time. It is the job

of therapist to help the hoarder make the right decisions about what they will donate to charity,

throw in the garbage or keep. This involves a methodical approach going room-by-room, not

looking at the entire house at one time. Once a person gets to this point, and rooms are starting to

be cleared, the treatment will focus on maintenance and relapse prevention.

One of the most cutting edge techniques in the treatment of hoarding in patients with this

syndrome involves the use of brain imaging to calculate the amount of cerebral activity. When the

data of this brain imaging study was deciphered, the researchers found that hoarders had a

unique pattern in the brain that was not found with non-hoarders. Those who had an

uncontrollable desire to collect things showed a significantly lower metabolism in the part of the

brain which processes what they visualize. As more and more treatment of hoarding studies are

done, researchers will be able to design medications to specifically target brain dysfunctions

associated with hoarding. Treatments in the future will also be able to address the inability to

process information correctly found in people with compulsive-hoarding syndrome, such as

attention and memory deficiencies, organization skills, and the ability to make a decision.
