Where is Italy: A Geographic Guide to Italia

Where is Italy located in the world? Finding it on a map or a globe is very

easy and it is a hard area to forget.

Technically Italy is a peninsula, bordered on three sides by seas: the

Adriatic Sea lies to east, the Tyrrhenian extending to the Mediterranean on

the west and finally, the Ionian Sea lies to the southwest. The land area is

bordered by other European states including France, Switzerland and

Australia. Where is Italy? Right there, at the corner of the European

continent.

Italy was one of the founders of the European Union and is a democratic

republic. The Islands of Sicily and Sardinia are considered part of Italy. This

country also includes two independent nation-states (or enclaves): The

Vatican and San Marino that govern themselves outside of Italy’s rule. Its

major cities include the capital of Rome, Naples, Venice and Genoa.

Where is Italy compared to the rest of Europe? To find it on a map, all you

have to do is locate a boot shaped landmass bursting out near Switzerland

and Spain. The tip of the boot looks like it is kicking a smaller island, Sicily.

It is quite easy to find and recognize on a map.

Where is Italy in terms of mountains or other easy to identify natural

landmarks? The most prominent feature of the peninsula is the Alps, which

is located near its northern borders as well as the Apennine Mountains.

The mountains provide a visual dividing line between the east and west

coasts of the peninsula.

Italy’s highest mountain is Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain in

Europe. The geographic location makes it a hotbed for tectonic activity.

The peninsula has 14 volcanoes, the most famous of which are Etna and

Vesuvius. The volcanoes are responsible for the fertility of Italian soil,

especially in the South.

Where is Italy when it comes to history? For centuries, Italy was the center

of the world. The saying all roads lead to Rome was never truer. Rome’s

empire stretched from Italy, down into Egypt and up till Britain. The Roman

Empire was responsible for many modern innovations, such as archways

and paved roads. Italy was also the center of movements like the

Renaissance and played a huge role in the development of art, trading and

banks.

Nowadays, it is still considered to be a strong political and economic

influence in the EU and around the world.
