Executive Summary
HSBS Funding—Where does it come from?
The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
received a four-year, $12 million grant from the Office of Head Start (U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and
Families) to create Head Start Body Start Center for Physical Development
and Outdoor Play (HSBS). HSBS awards federal funds to Head Start/Early
Head Start centers nationwide to improve their outdoor play spaces in order
to encourage children‘s physical activity. Each Head Start center is eligible
to receive a grant of up to $5,000 in one-time funding for improvements to
play spaces. For example, a Head Start Grantee Agency that has 10 centers
in their jurisdiction can receive $50,000 in HSBS funding ($5,000 per center
x ten centers). HSBS also provides extensive training and education materi-
als for Head Start educators; see www.HSBS.org.
Preferred Vendors—What are the benefits of selecting a
Preferred Vendor?
HSBS Preferred Vendors will offer awarded centers with a custom designed
value-added package that provides children with toys, equipment, lesson
plans, and additional contents that are geared towards various movement
categories important in early childhood development. The items contained
in the packages have been evaluated and selected by early childhood devel-
opment professionals as products that will enhance the development of chil-
dren between the age range of 0-3 and/or 3-5 years old.
In addition to the developmental features, the Preferred Vendors have also
provided the packages at least 20 percent below the retail price. This allows
Head Start centers to maximize the use of these one-time play space im-
provement funds. The discounted prices offered are exclusive to HSBS play
space grantees awarded in 2011. While the centers are not required to use
HSBS Preferred Vendors, the products and services being offered are spe-
cifically geared towards Head Start children with the added bonus of dis-
counted pricing on products.

In the past two years, HSBS funds have been awarded to centers across

HSBS Play Space Awards—What have centers purchased
in the past?
Past play space grant recipients have spent grant funds on various areas of
needed playground and equipment improvements. The selection of a proper
play space improvement plan starts from the needs assessment tool that
HSBS has designed to assist in identifying key areas of importance in a play

The Coupe Deluxe is an inviting, innovative play space where young children can meet,

On Day 1, we meet with your group to discuss the research-based Nature Explore
guidelines as well as your unique ideas, interests and needs.
Step 3: Our team will create a unique concept plan for your space. While the Land-
scape Architect is drawing, the Educator will present an Educator Orientation for
your staff.
Step 4: On Day 2, we meet with your planning group to review the concept plan
and make any necessary changes. Then we create an Implementation Plan contain
ing resources and support for your project. About a week later, you will receive a
full-color PDF of the final concept plan and a written narrative of all the discussions

Description
The Large Drums (set of 3), Chime Panel and Xylophone provide children with an op-
portunity to use large movement and make musical sounds while moving, dancing,
twisting, marching and jumping to the music. They will strengthen hand muscles to
grasp the drum mallet, use large shoulder and arm muscles to strike the drum, and in-
crease eye-hand coordination. The Chime Panel and Xylophone are both tuned to a full
scale so children and adults can play/sing songs while moving. These are designed to
be outdoors at all times for children's use. Each item comes with a list of Early Learn-
ing Standards that are being met while using the equipment.
