Here is how it goes: Network marketing is recession proof! This is not the last recession. Join us
so that the next time there is a recession, you and your family will be ready.
This sounds so good! This message is powerful and attracts many people during this side-ways
economy who themselves are seeking solutions. Within my organization there is a leader whose
seminars are entitled "Network Marketing. A Recession Proof Business"
Because I am so committed to being an emissary of the truth -- to the best of my ability -- I
suggest that we dissect this message so that we may become ever more responsible in leading
others to understand and appreciate how network marketing works during a recession.
For starters, "recession proof" suggests that this business will thrive no matter what. Recession
proof implies that when the economy weakens, which it does during a recession, that a network
marketing business is unaffected. Although there is plenty of good news in the broader picture,
with regards to both of these particular claims, unfortunately neither is true.
Like any Other Business
One of the reasons any business is solid is because it is well-tended. Like a shepherd who takes
excellent care of her flock, a business is strong because it is cared for like any valuable asset.
Someone who has an art collection that is worth millions of dollars must still tend to the collection
in order for it to maintain its value. Maybe this means buying and selling art at opportune times.
Maybe it means that the collector would hire new managers to make sure that the art is displayed
where there is the most revenue. Whatever it is, to protect the asset, its owner must be a good
steward of it.
The same is true of a network marketing business. During any economy, the best team leaders of
an MLM organization take very good care of the group that they have built. This includes
overcoming and compensating for any attrition (which there will be during a recession), providing
excellent training for distributors, and for the team leader herself to continue to lead by example. It
is naïve to think that an MLM business would thrive during a downturn economy no matter what.
This is the wrong message, an irresponsible message, and does nothing to raise the bar of a
business in network marketing. Frankly, to say that it is recession proof without addressing these
considerations cheapens network marketing. This is why I do not make such a false and blanket
claim and recommend that you do not as well.
Customers who enjoyed products at some point may decide that these expenditures get
eliminated when the family is cutting back due to budgetary constraints. This is why it is so
important that we provide an excellent program for servicing and supporting our customers. To
have a rock solid income base also means that we must continuously attract new customers. Let's
compare this to a restaurant. During a recession, would you not expect that the restaurant owner
be pro-active to make sure that customers continued to come through the door? This might mean
adding new and exciting menu items, offering "specials", anything and everything that a
responsible business owner would do to make sure that the business remains profitable. No one in
her right mind would think that a restaurant owner would merely sit back, thinking that his
restaurant is so good, that during a recession, the restaurant can run on automatic pilot. A
business is solid because those who run it take massive action to make certain that it continues to
do so. Why should MLM be any different?
The Bright Side
Now for the good news. In a way, a network marketing business is somewhat recession proof.
Here is how that is so. If you have built a solid business, and even if there is some attrition during
a recession -- which you can count on! -- you can still enjoy residual income. Even if that income
drops by some percentage, it can still come in automatically, which is a real blessing at a time
when others lose their income to getting laid off. This is the main point to emphasize when
comparing network marketing to regular employment. Assuming that your company does not fold
(which is itself a separate consideration) in network marketing one does not get fired or
downsized. This is a huge distinction and you must communicate it properly and with no
hyperbole. If you build solidly, when the economy tanks, you own the income that you have
worked hard to set up. That is not something anyone can say who works for someone else.
A network marketing can grow during a recession. A leader must face the music and be prepared
to deal with the effects of a downturn economy to advance his business forward. It is wiser to
explain this to new recruits than it is to glibly throw out the "recession proof" spiel so that more
associates are prepared to do the work. This honesty can raise an entire organization. Setting
expectations is what a good team leader does for everyone in the group.
It is true that anyone can enjoy this aspect of network marketing, and the freedom that comes with
residual income. Be smart, raise your prospects and team members up to the high standards of
owning and operating a thriving, stable, and profitable organization. If you want to talk about
recession-proof, then be sure to include the sobering fact that to be paid during a recession while
experiencing as little disruption as possible, you will need to build something that is very solid. As
business men and business women, isn't that what we want any way?
