I have had allergenic contact eczema my whole life. I am personally allergic to tannic acid, which is used to

soften leather. I am also allergic to most metals, and I cannot wear jewelry. Whenever I break out from contact

with leather, it’s just irritating, even if I’ve worn leather boots all day long. However, my reaction to contact with

stainless steel is very painful after just a couple of hours.

There are many skin conditions that can affect each of us, and eczema is one of the more common. It is a skin

allergy that can differ from one sort of eczema to another, and from person to person. The word “eczema” comes

from the Greek language, and it can be similar in appearance to a boil. Eczema can appear terribly unattractive,

particularly on the face, but it isn't catching. Like any illness, it also has symptoms. Key among these is red, dry,

inflamed skin. The primary characteristic is itching, and it is best to treat it as soon as possible.

In skin areas impacted by an untreated eczema, the result can be very unpleasant. There may be tiny blisters full

of liquid which will dry up in a day or two, and become encrusted. Further delay in treatment may see the crusts

open up into bloody wounds, leaving the body open to further infection. Key body parts influenced by eczema

are the hands, face, elbows, and back part of the knees, although it can afflict the entire body.

There are many factors which may cause an eczema. Those behind it often rely upon which type it is. They may

each look similar, but they're really different from one another, because different kinds have different causes.

One is atopic eczema, which is most common. As many as one in five children may have this type, which is

believed to be hereditary, and is thought to be caused by environmental factors such as smog or acid rain.

Contact eczema is another type which develops when someone has been in contact with something that the skin

doesn't agree with. This has symptoms similar to atopic eczema. Another kind is allergenic contact eczema.

Almost everyone that suffers from this isn't born with this sensitivity, but it can develop over time. Irritant

contact eczema is due to daily contact with some substance(s) which may cause skin irritation, such as

detergents.

Eczema’s diagnosis in general isn't very difficult. Dermatologists often diagnose it simply by the skin’s

appearance. When allergenic eczema is diagnosed, a simple test can be utilized that can tell which substance is

causing it.
