					The Thirteen Colonies
                Founded in 1630 by
Massachusetts   John Winthrop,
                Massachusetts
                Colony was named
                by the local Native
                Americans and
                Literally means
                “Large Hill Place”.
New Hampshire




                The first major industries in
                New Hampshire were fishing,
                hunting, and timber, which can
                be seen above in the first seal of
                New Hampshire.
New York   Originally a Dutch colony,
           New York was officially
           taken over by the English in
           1677 when the Prince of
           Orange married the Duke of
           York’s daughter. This
           couple is historically known
           as William and Mary.
Connecticut




Founded in 1636 by Thomas
Hooker, Connecticut is named
after the Algonquin word
meaning “beside the long tidal
river.”
Rhode Island




               Founded in 1636 by
               Roger Williams, Rhode
               Island was named for
               the Dutch word
               meaning Red Rock.
               Founded in 1682 by William Penn,
Pennsylvania   Pennsylvania was arguably the most
                                        important
                                        state in
                                        colonial
                                        America.
New Jersey
Founded in 1664 by English
Colonists, New Jersey was one of
the few colonies that relied on
industrial activities from its
inception. The main industry of
colonial New Jersey was iron
working.

                                   On the left one can see a
                                   three shilling New Jersey
                                   note. It was not uncommon
                                   for states to produce their
                                   own money during the
                                   colonial period.
 Maryland




Founded in 1633 by Lord Baltimore,
Maryland became one of the premiere
ship building colonies in the New
World.
Delaware                       Founded in 1638 by Peter Minuit,
                               Delaware was founded on the
                               industries of fishing, farming, and
                               timber.




On the right is the original
colonial charter for
Delaware.
Virginia




           Virginia was founded in 1607 by
           John Smith. Jamestown was the
           first successful town established
           in the original colonies.
North Carolina




North Carolina was
founded in 1653 by
Virginia Colonists. In
1711 one of the worst
colonial massacres took
place at the hands of
Native American
warriors.
South Carolina   South
                 Carolina was
                 founded in
                 1663 by
                 English
                 Colonists.
                 South
                 Carolina was
                 set up as an
                 agricultural
                 colony
                 focusing on
                 the
                 production of
                 indigo, rice,
                 tobacco, and
                 cotton.
Georgia   Georgia
          was
          founded in
          1732 by
          James
          Oglethorpe.
          On the right
          is
          Savannah,
          the first
          major
          settlement
          in Georgia.
