             LETTER FROM THE 2006 PRESIDENT

Welcome Letter From
The 2006 President
It has been an honor and privilege to have served as
your 2006 Lakeville Area Chamber President. It has
been an exciting year, with many remarkable changes
that have occurred over the past 12 months.

One of those changes is the continued record growth
of the Chamber. My fellow board members and I are
thrilled once again to bring you this 2007 Membership
Directory. This directory includes a record 446 member businesses of all kinds and
sizes, offering your potential customers, products, services and answers for any
business need. Please keep this guide handy, as it is the most important resource
for Chamber members to communicate their goods and services to each other and
new residents in our community.

Another important communication vehicle is the New Resident Guide, sent to
over 2000 new residents in 2006. This special bound edition of our Membership
Directory includes all of our members, along with important community, government,
tourism and school district information.

Besides the Membership Directory and New Resident Guide, other changes
in our communications included the revitalization of the Chamber newsletter,
enhancement of the Monthly Calendar page, and improved e-mail communications
among membership. We continue to have record setting attendance at our social
and networking events, and continue to attract influential speakers to our monthly
luncheons.

Finally, I invite you to visit us at our new Chamber office at 19950 Dodd Boulevard
this spring. I am so excited to be moving into a first class facility that will allow us to
proved better service to our members and residents of Lakeville.

To those who were involved in 2006, thank you. Remember, positive change occurs
only when you participate in Chamber activities and programs, and communicate
with your fellow Chamber members!

Sincerely,

Connie Kuntzman, 2006 Chamber President

                 LETTER FROM THE 2007 PRESIDENT

    Welcome Letter from
    the 2007 President

Thank you for using your 2006-2007 Membership
Directory and New Resident Guide. We are proud
to provide this valuable resource to our business
community. Over 600 fellow chamber members, and
thousands of new Lakeville residents will use it. It should be your first point of
reference whenever you are looking for goods or services. Demonstrate your
support for our chamber by utilizing chamber members for the products and
services you need. Encourage your vendors and other business that are not
currently members to join forces with our over 446 member businesses.

In 2007 the chamber will focus on added value to our membership, starting with
the move to our new facility in spring. This strategic investment will provide
greater exposure and efficiencies, and offer more services to our membership. We
look forward to growth in our membership numbers as our business community
continues to grow. Participation in the Grow MN program will help us keep a
pulse on issues important to our businesses. And we will continue to enhance our
communications with members to provide outstanding service, increase member
    benefits, and improve membership involvement.

I also encourage your involvement - get the most you can out of your investment
in the chamber. Benefit from the expertise an experience of our member
companies and build solid business-to-business relationships to help grow your
business. I invite you to contribute your energy, enthusiasm and support to make
this a successful year in business.

    Sincerely,

ment, commitment to education, environmental stewardship and support for development that
enhances quality of life.

Back in 1853, Captain William B. Dodd directed construction of a road connecting the military
forts in St. Paul and the southern forts in St. Peter and Mankato. That road was later named for
Captain Dodd.

In 1855, 250 acres were platted at the halfway point along the route by J.J. Brackett, who used
the road to transport travelers and supplies. The settlement, near beautiful Prairie Lake, was
called Lakeville. A post office was established in J.J. Brackett’s home, and in 1856 the first school
building was constructed to serve the area.

Conveniently locate, by 1858, the Village of Lakeville had grown to include a general store, two
hotels, a boarding house, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, and a shoemaker shop. That same year,
Lakeville township, which encompassed the rural farming areas around the Village, was officially
formed. A variety of ethnic groups continued to settle in the area, including immigrants from
Ireland, Scotland, England, and the Scandinavian countries.

When the Hastings and Dakota Railroad come through in 1869, officials were unable to purchase
land adjacent to the Village site. So, the railroad bought 20 acres just one-half mile east and
named the area Fairfield. It wasn’t long before the existing businesses moved the short distance
to Fairfield and new businesses joined them. The first town site was soon abandoned and the
new site took the name of Lakeville in 1878.

In 1889, the Village Council appropriated $1,000 for anyone who would start a creamery to serve
the community, and in 1890 a creamery was started by a group of farmers from the area. Wheat
was the major crop produced by Minnesota farmers, and in 1891 the Village Council again offered
a financial incentive to encourage needed development – this time $1,5000 for a mill. By 1892,
the Claro Mill, located by the railroad tracks and 208th Street, was up and running.

By 1900, the village had grown to a population of 373, and voters approved a $3,500 bond issue
to build a new engine house, lock up, and Village Hall. In 1901, the Village and Fire Hall opened,
complete with a bell tower and well to summon townspeople to fight fires.

In 1967, Lakeville Township and Lakeville Village merged to form the City of Lakeville. Since then,
Lakeville has continued to grow into a dynamic suburban community where residents and busi-
nesses work together, just as their pioneer ancestors did.

Today, Lakeville encompasses 38 square miles and has a growing population, currently over
46,000. Dodd Boulevard still bisects the City, and the former Prairie Lake, now called Lake
Marion, is a valued recreational and environmental feature. The original village and fire hall with
its bell tower still stands in downtown Lakeville today, along with a variety of thriving businesses.
The original bell now hangs at the Fire Department headquarters on Holyoke Avenue.

The City has doubled in size during the past ten years, but strives to preserve its small town heri-
tage. Over the next decade, Lakeville is expected to continue to be one of the fastest growing
communities in the seven-county metropolitan area. By the year 2020, the population is projected
to reach 75,000.

The City Council has worked proactively to establish the necessary groundwork to ensure that the
inevitable growth in our conveniently located city will be well-managed and designed to preserve
Lakeville’s quality of life.
