• Nomadic

• Polytheistic

• Tribal

Founding of Islam

 Founded by Muhammad around 610

in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

 The Angel Gabriel came to him and

through his visions he developed the

Quran.

 Muhammad began to preach these

teachings.

Early Islam

 Mecca was a center of worship for

many religions. (Promoted Trade)

 Leaders of Mecca run Muhammad out

of Mecca because Islam is

Monotheistic.

 Muhammad and his Islamic followers

go to Medina.

 Islamic religion develops there.

Early Islam

 Then Muhammad leads his Islamic

followers back to Mecca.

 There are 3 wars between Mecca and

Medina.

 Muhammad then establishes Mecca

as the center of Islam.

The Five Pillars of Islam

 Shahada- The Creed of Islam

 Salat- Prayer

 Zakat- Alms Giving

 Ramadan- Month of Fasting

 Hajj- Pilgrimage

Shahada

 This is the Creed of Islam.

 “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the

Messenger of God”

 This reinforces Islam’s absolute

monotheism.

Salat

 This is Prayer to Allah (God)

 These prayers take place 5 times a

day.

-They are at established times in the

morning, mid-morning, noon,

afternoon, and evening.

-The worshipper faces Mecca when

they pray.

Zakat

 This is Alms Giving

 A Muslim should give 2 1/2 % of

their income for Zakat.

 This $ can be given to anybody

within the Muslims community.

-So if there is someone needy in

the community the Zakat can be

given to them.

Ramadan

 It is also known as Sawn.

 It is in the 10th Month of the Islamic Calendar.

-Islam is on a lunar calendar.

 Cannot eat from Sun up to Sun down.

-They are allowed to drink water (Islam did begin

in a desert)

 It is to focus their lives spiritually.

-If someone breaks the fasting rules during Ramadan there

are days added to their fasting. There are exceptions made for

children, the elderly, and women who are pregnant.

Hajj

 Is a pilgrimage to Mecca

 It occurs during the 12th Month of

the Islamic Calendar

 A Muslim must try to go on the Hajj

once in their lives.

-If the Muslim cannot physically

go on the Hajj, they may send

someone else in their place.

The Ka’aba

The Great Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia

The Ka’aba

 Is what Muslims are praying towards

when they face Mecca.

 The Ka’aba was a religious shrine to

many Nomadic tribes before Islam.

 It was said to be the place where

Abraham (of the Bible) was to

sacrifice his son Isaac.
