What is conversational hypnosis? It is an art. A performance art, if you like. Like juggling or great
oratory it is essentially a skill that can be learned, developed and, by some, mastered. All that's
needed for most people to become proficient in conversational hypnosis is commitment and
access to the right hypnosis techniques.
Conversational hypnosis is the practice of inducing hypnotic trances by captivating someones
focus through the use of language. Moreover the trance is induced for the specific purpose of
providing access to a persons underlying psychology with a view to changing a predetermined
aspect of their psychology. This is known as conversational induction and it is the most powerful
form of interpersonal communication known to science.
Conversational hypnosis works by breaking the objective down into achievable and measurable
hypnosis techniques. The hypnotist needs to develop a 'Signal Recognition System' so that they
can "read" a persons level of trance. They need to be able to rapidly build relationships and
'Rapport.' They need to understand both the foundations of hypnotic language and it ultimate
application in apparently normal conversation. They need to develop the use of specific hypnosis
techniques such as 'Authority Strategies,' strategies for destroying resistance and so on. By
combining these, and other skills the conversational hypnotist can adapt and 'Calibrate' their
hypnosis techniques to suit different people and environments. It is an extremely versatile and
phenomenally effective skill.
At an early stage you will need to learn some 'Signal Recognition Systems.' Conversational
hypnosis is a modern, ever evolving skill that embraces the latest methodologies and
psychological research. For example by adopting aspects of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
conversational hypnosis teaches how to recognize the subtle language indicators that reveal the
presence of trance. So if you learn these hypnosis techniques not only will you be able to monitor
and calibrate your own progression through the hypnotic process but will also start to notice the
incredible frequency with which trance occurs in all of our everyday lives. Signal recognition is a
core element of the hypnosis technique because you use and improve upon it throughout the initial
learning process and beyond.
A good conversational hypnotist can rapidly build an effective relationship with an individual.
Conversational hypnotists refer to this stage of the process as building 'rapport.' However it is not
simply the kind of transient relationships that most of us use everyday to communicate with people
we meet on a casual basis. Using hypnotic language, the conversational hypnotist builds a deeper
more abiding relationship with the person to be hypnotized. This can be achieved in a remarkably
short space of time and enables the hypnotist to establish the kind of intimacy that will encourage
the person being hypnotized to behave as directed. Not because they are doing as they are told
but because they want to do as they are asked.
This is only possible because of the hypnosis techniques of 'hypnotic language foundation' and
'advanced hypnotic language.' The use of predetermined language is absolutely fundamental to
successful conversational hypnosis. The hypnotic effect is produced through a combination of
words. Of course this is a partial definition of language itself and indeed language is the tool that
the human brain uses to organize thought. When we think, we construct imagery through the use
of language. Therefore by using language in a certain way we can introduce new imagery into the
mind of others.
Using predetermined language strategies, such as 'Authority Strategy,' the hypnotist can phrase
suggestions that the subject subconsciously wants to follow. In essence the subject wants to carry
out your hypnotic suggestion though they may not be consciously aware of it. 'Authority Strategies'
are a fundamental to conversational hypnosis because the hypnotist must be able to lead the
subject through the hypnosis for it to be effective.
The successful conversational hypnotist understands the emotional triggers that influence the
subjects responses. Once identified, these emotional triggers can be used by the hypnotist to alter
the subjects feelings regarding both their perception of the hypnotist and their emotional response
to suggestions. This is part of the process of overcoming the subjects natural resistance to
psychological intervention. This 'resistance' is a perfectly normal human defense mechanism
called the 'critical factor.' Without it we'd simply believe anything we were told.
Consequently another extremely important skill to acquire is the 'Destroy Resistance Strategy.'
This is achieved through the use of metaphor and story telling to overcome the critical factor.
Language repetition reinforces concepts whilst the metaphorical story enables the subject to agree
with and eventually adopt concepts that they may otherwise reject. This is an extremely powerful
process as the hypnotist can start to suggest totally new ways of thinking to the subject, resulting
in actual changes to their behavior.
As already stated these hypnosis techniques are not vague concepts. They are practical skills that
are based upon specific formulas. This means two things. One, they can be learned by anyone
who takes the time to understand them and two, they can be proven to be effective and can be
continually refined and developed through practice. For example the P-CAT formula (problem,
confuse, access resources and transform) allows the conversational hypnotist to change
problematic psychological responses to emotional triggers. Similarly other useful formulas such as
the COMILA formula (captivation, mood, intensify mood, link and action) and LIFE (language,
induction, frames and emotion)checklist enable the conversational hypnotist to quickly and
accurately monitor the hypnosis techniques as the hypnotic language continues.
Further, specific hypnosis techniques can then be used to progress the hypnotic process. For
example 'Future Memories' is a process whereby the use of hypnotic language and metaphor
creates the desire for memories of events that haven't actually happened. These are then
positively reinforced through techniques such as the 'Hypnotic Triple' and 'Persistence Tactics.'
Other hypnosis techniques such as 'Stacking Realities' or 'Accidental Trance Identification' enable
the hypnotist to further bypass the critical factor and create greater influence. For example with
'Advanced Frame Control' the conversational hypnotist can continually monitor and mould the
conversation to best suit the hypnotic process.
These are just some of the skills you need to acquire. However, whilst there are numerous
hypnosis techniques and strategies that you need to familiarize yourself with on the road to
becoming an effective conversational hypnotist, these are not individually difficult to learn. Using
these strategies and language skills the conversational hypnotist is able to establish an incredible
level of influence in the subconscious mind of the subject. The brilliance of this hypnosis technique
is that anyone listening to the conversation would not necessarily notice anything unusual about it.
Indeed, even more surprisingly, the subject themselves are not consciously aware of the process.
Knowledge of these kind of hypnosis techniques will make an amazing difference to both your
personal and professional relationships. In my experience these are always positive though one
should approach anything so potentially life changing as conversational hypnosis with enthusiasm
but also a degree of trepidation.
