Nova Southeastern University Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies The Mailman Segal Institute National CDA/FCCPC Program is a 9-credit, 120 hour series of three 3-credit courses: EECB 2100, 2110 and 2120. Courses consist of eight 4hour class meetings and directed field experiences, leading to the Florida Child Care Professional Certificate (FCCPC). New classes start in January, March, June and September. The program includes training in the 6 Competencies and 13 Functional Areas as defined by the national CDA Council for Professional Recognition. Students gain understanding of child development birth-age 5, and develop skills planning and implementing activities in early childhood program settings. A Professional Resource File of resources and contact information is constructed. Students are prepared to apply for national CDA credentialing in center-based preschool, infant-toddler, or family child care specialization. CDA I – EECB 2100 This course covers the functional areas Professionalism, Safe, Health, and Learning Environments. The course provides students with avenues of ongoing professional development. It prepares students to ensure the safety and health of children in early childhood settings, and to establish age-appropriate learning environments for children from birth to age five. CDA II – EECB 2110 This course covers the functional areas Physical, Cognitive, Communication, and Creative. It enhances students’ ability to support physical and intellectual development and to encourage the development of communication skills and creative expression of children from birth to age five. CDA III – EECB 2120 This course covers the functional areas Self, Social, Guidance, Families, and Program Management. It enhances students’ ability to support the development of positive selfconcept, guide the socialization, provide positive guidance to children from birth to age five, and to work effectively with families. It provides students with opportunities to enhance management skills and identify oneself as an early childhood leader.
