Research Rivals: Microsoft, IBM, and Google

Two stalwarts of the computer industry, IBM and Microsoft, have long competed on many fronts. Information professionals may not think of them as research rivals, but both offer free research products. When it comes to scholarly databases, what probably comes to mind first is Google Scholar, but all three are competing in the academic research space. This article traces the love-hate relationship between IBM and Microsoft and show where Google fits in as a rival in academic search.
