PART-TIME PROGRAM ASSISTANT
World Hunger Year- National Hunger Clearinghouse:
World Hunger Year (WHY) attacks the root causes of hunger and poverty by promoting
effective and innovative community-based solutions that create self-reliance, economic justice
and food security. The National Hunger Clearinghouse (NHC), a program of WHY, is a
centralized, nation-wide database of innovative organizations working on food, nutrition, and
agriculture issues around the country. We focus on constructive, community-based solutions to
hunger and poverty within and between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Every year,
we receive thousands of telephone calls to our National Hunger Hotline. Through the National
Hunger Hotline, we connect individuals in need to emergency food, government programs, and
community services in their own communities through our extensive network of community-
based organizations.
Job Description:
To assist in responding to the National Hunger Hotline telephone calls and strengthening the
resources within the National Hunger Clearinghouse. The position allows for personal initiative;
therefore we seek a Part-time Program Assistant who will approach the position both critically
and creatively.
Objectives and Tasks:
Information Dissemination
Reply to National Hunger Hotline telephone calls from individuals in need of emergency
food resources, individuals looking to donate or wanting volunteer opportunities, groups
in need of assistance, and people wanting to start their own emergency feeding program.
Communicate with and assist community-based organizations via telephone, Internet,
fax, in-person, and mail.
Develop or improve resources to assist grassroots groups in providing better services to
their clients with an emphasis on hunger and poverty issues.
Assemble mail merges for annual update and outreach.
Information Collection
Outreach to agencies nationwide that provide emergency food services, assistance with
government programs, and other agencies that provide services to help individuals move
towards self-reliance.
Modify and edit mailing lists, as required for inclusion in the National Hunger
Clearinghouse databases.
Assist with annual update of National Hunger Clearinghouse database records
Collect and enter National Hunger Clearinghouse survey forms in database.
Verify data by phone, fax, mail, or e-mail.
Conduct site visits to organizations and write field reports on the organizations
Other
Assist the National Hunger Clearinghouse Program Director with various projects or as
needed.
Hours:
Approximately 25 hours per week. Schedule is flexible but does require EVERY
Saturday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.
Qualifications:
Bachelor Degree or degree candidate, college students encouraged to apply
Experience working for anti-hunger or poverty organizations, preferred
Excellent writing and oral communication skills
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and prior experience working with
databases, preferred
Proficient in MS Office, including MS Word, MS Excel, Access and Internet applications
