                   VCE AT SALESIAN COLLEGE
INTRODUCTION

This booklet is intended to provide background information so that students and parents
may understand the structure of the VCE and make reasoned choices with regard to studies
to be taken for the next two years. Obviously, this is a very important step and will have
considerable influence upon options for careers or post-secondary studies.

By offering a large range of VCE studies, Salesian College aims to cater for the needs and
aspirations of a very wide range of students. This breadth of curriculum maximises the
options open to students whether their chosen pathway is to University, TAFE Colleges,
Independent Tertiary Colleges or directly to employment. Furthermore, the very supportive
and yet challenging environment which students experience encourages them to develop
both academically and personally.

It is recommended that this booklet be printed and retained for reference as necessary over
the coming twelve months.

V.C.E. 2012 REQUIREMENTS

To be awarded the VCE, a student must successfully complete at least 16 units of study.
Generally, students complete 20 - 24 units throughout Years 11 and 12. These are
comprised of Unit 1 and/or Unit 2 studies, which may be undertaken as single units, and
Unit 3, and 4 studies that must be taken as a sequence of units.

Students are required to undertake a balanced program over two years, including:

 Satisfactory passes in at least three units of accredited English studies.
 Satisfactory passes in at least three pairs of units at the 3 and 4 level, other than
       English.

At Salesian College, students usually undertake up to 12 units at Year 11 level (including
two R.E. units) and 10 units at Year 12 level. Students who undertake unit 3/4 studies in
Year 11, and perform well in those subjects, may apply to study Enhancement Studies in
Year 12. Students may also include one or two VET courses as part of their program.

VCE ENGLISH FOR 2012
The three units of English, which must be studied and satisfactorily passed, may be
selected from English Units 1 to 4 and English Literature Units 1 to 4.

VICTORIAN CERTIFICATE OF APPLIED LEARNING (VCAL)

In addition to the above VCE and VET options, the college also offers the VCAL as an
accredited pathway to learning industry specific knowledge and work-related skills. There
are no formal entry requirements and students can enter at a level of VCAL suiting their
learning needs, abilities and interests. Decisions about which VCAL level a student should
undertake are negotiated with the VCAL Coordinator and take into account the student’s
literacy level, interests, goals and general abilities. More detailed information about the
VCAL is available in the College’s VCAL Information booklet.

                                                       3
ASSESSMENT FOR VCE

UNIT 1 & 2
Units 1 & 2 studies are internally assessed by the school, based on an achievement of the
learning outcomes outlined by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

UNIT 3 & 4
Units 3 and 4 studies have both external and internal components of assessment. External
exams for studies are held in June and October/November, the length of the examinations
and the number of examinations are specific to each study. The details of all assessment
are supplied in the Guide to VCE 2012 published by the VCAA.

SCHOOL ASSESSED COURSEWORK (SAC)
School assessed coursework is designed to reduce the workload of students by ensuring
that the tasks being used for assessment are completed mainly in class time. School
assessments are monitored by use of the GAT (General Achievement Test) and are
statistically moderated.

VCE AND MODERATION
Moderation is the procedure used by the VCAA to ensure that assessment of coursework is
comparable across the State and fair to all students. Schools assess coursework by a range
of tasks or topics; some may be easier or harder than others. Students’ internal assessment
scores are compared with their performance on at least one external exam (in some studies
there are two exams) and their GAT score. The scores for all students undertaking the study
in a moderation group are adjusted so that the highest score externally becomes the highest
school assessed score, and the lowest score externally is close to or equal with the lowest
internally assessed score. The average for the moderation group scores is also made equal
to the average for the external scores. All other student marks are then adjusted up or down
to obtain a moderated coursework score. For this reason, the school assessments provided
throughout the year may change when results are moderated by the VCAA.

AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR)

The final marks for internal and external assessments are used by the VCAA to calculate a
study score. These are then used by Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre to determine a
student’s ATAR.

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank is calculated by VTAC using the student’s scores
for Units 3 and 4 VCE studies. It allows comparisons to be made across studies and is
used as a primary method of deciding which tertiary courses are offered to students.

While subject to a number of restrictions, a student’s ATAR is produced by adding:
i)     Subject score in English or Literature;
ii)    The best three subject scores;
III) 10% of the fifth and/or sixth subject scores.

The ATAR Calculation is based on an aggregate of the scaled study courses, converted into
a rank score. More details are available from the Pathways Team and from the VTAC
website: www.vtac.edu.au

                                             4
TERTIARY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

A number of tertiary courses have set subject and achievement level requirements for
admission into their courses. Tertiary Entrance Requirements for courses are set three
years in advance, and are published when students are in Year 10. Tertiary Entrance
Requirements for 2013 and 2014 are available from the Pathways Offices. The Age and
Herald Sun also publish supplements with this information. They are also available on the
VTAC website: www.vtac.edu.au.

VCE PROGRAMS

A VCE Program is a two-year (and sometimes three year) course plan, outlining the
combination of units a student aims to study. Many students will have a clear sense of
direction and will construct quite specific programs around their interests, talents and career
directions or pathways. Other students, who are still working through possible career
directions and pathways, can construct programs from a variety of curriculum areas to
explore their abilities and interests in a varied set of studies. When selecting subjects,
students should consider the possible pathways that lead to University, TAFE,
Apprenticeships or employment.

On the following pages you will find sample VCE Programs in the Art, Business, Humanities
and Science/Technology areas. Each program is concluded with the pathways mentioned
above. The College Pathways Team, based on current information, has developed these
pathways; however, students should use this information as a guide only. In the following
years some of the pathway information may undergo modification. Students should attempt
to keep themselves informed of changes in the pathways area (e.g. Tertiary Entrance
Requirements for 2013/2014).

The Religious Education Program offers a range of studies from which students can make
their selection, including Religion and Society Units 3 - 4, Religion and Story, and Religion,
Justice and Ethics. These units are included in the Arts/Humanities section of the College’s
handbook.

The program you construct will depend on your particular interests and future intentions.
The programs are offered as a guide to subject selection, and are not intended to be
prescriptive. Students have at their disposal significant flexibility in the subject combinations
they select. Students also have flexibility to change their selections even after course
advice. This will, however, depend upon the suitability of the changes to their chosen
career paths, availability of places in subjects and timetable constraints. All changes must
be made following the protocol outlined in the student handbooks for VCE, available at the
start of 2012.
