Flashlight™ Item Bank:

Feedback for Presentations in High Tech Classrooms

This material was drafted with the support of, and for, institutions that are active subscribers to The TLT

Group. The TLT Group is a not-for-profit that exists because these institutions have chosen to give it their

financial support. To see if your institution is a subscriber, click here. Take a look but we ask that you not

make use of this material unless or until your institution subscribes. Thank you for your understanding and

support!

This item bank is not yet in final form. Please take a careful and tell us if a) you can use it, b) you have

suggestions for improving it (e.g., additional items; rewrites of items to make them more clear). If we hear

from you, we’ll move more quickly to get this into Flashlight Online. Please send feedback to Steve

Ehrmann.

Using a high tech classroom (e.g., with a computer for presentations and web connectivity; document

camera; technology to help students work together)? Want feedback to help you get more instructional

value from that facility? Use this item bank to draft a brief survey tailored to your own needs. Just use a

few of these questions, rewrite them if you need to, and add questions of your own if you like.

Most of these questions are framed in a positive way (e.g., Agree/disagree: "The total amount of text is

satisfactory") but you may find you get more pointed, useful feedback when you mix in questions about

potential problems (e.g., Agree/disagree: " There is so much text on the screen that it is hard to read them.")

Questions with materials in [brackets] are designed for you to fine tune or focus.

Section I: Functional Use

Clarity of Material Shown On Screen

Please indicate how strongly Neither No

you agree or disagree with

each of the following

Strongly Disagree Agree or Agree Strongly basis

statements about disagree (D) Disagree (A) Agree for

[presentations made with a (SD) (SA) Opinion

computer by the instructor

in this course][presentations

made with a computer by

students in this course] [the

presentation you just saw]

1=(strongly disagree) to 5=

(strongly agree);

or no basis for opinion.

The total amount of text on

the screen is usually OK:

enough to explain, not so

much that it’s hard to read in

the time available

Your handwriting on the

[interactive whiteboard ]

[tablet PC] is difficult to

read.

Pictures,, Motion & Animations

Because you use pictures to

illustrate steps of a process, I

understand the process better

Because you use figures

from the textbook in your

presentation, it is easier for

me to reference and review

material later

I would understand the

lecture better if you showed

additional pictures or video

relevant to course content

The pictures you used to

illustrate [x} were confusing

The use of

animations/videos helps me

understand complex

processes

Motion helps to focus my

attention on the ideas in the

slide.

Video and animation in the

presentation is often

distracting. I think about the

special effects instead of the

ideas in the slide.

The way you used the

document camera to show us

the details of [x} helped me

understand it.

Speed

The pace from one slide to the

next is just right to allow me to

take complete notes

The presentation often advances

too quickly and I lose track of

what you’re teaching.

The presentation often goes too

slowly – I get bored or distracted.

Lighting

The lighting when you show a

presentation is bright enough to

keep me awake

The lighting when you show a

presentation is dim enough that I

get sleepy.

The lighting in the classroom is

bright enough for note taking

The lighting in the classroom is

so bright that I have trouble

seeing the presentation clearly

from where I sit

Sight Lines

I have trouble seeing the

presentation clearly from where I

sit

Sound

The use of sound with the

presentation helped me

understand what you were trying

to teach.

Because I can review the class

materials online and in the books,

I rarely need to come to lectures.

When I have to miss class, I

always study the class materials

online.

Student Technology

Having a way for other students

in my team, or in the class, to see

our work really helped me learn.

Students being able to work at a

laptop during class was important

for the success of this course.

Having my own computer was

too distracting: e-mail, web sites,

and so on.

Our use of personal response

systems [classroom voting]

[clickers] helped me keep my

attention on what we were

studying.

`

Because of our use of of personal

response systems [classroom

voting] [clickers], our small

group discussions of difficult

concepts were more meaningful.

It was too much trouble to [bring

and] use the of personal response

systems [classroom voting]

[clickers].

Our use of personal response

systems [classroom voting]

[clickers] was pointless and

distracting.

Section II: Course Experience

Class Presentations

Please indicate how strongly you agree or Neither No basis

disagree with each of the following statements.

SD D Agree or A SA for

1=(strongly disagree) to 5= (strongly agree); or Disagree Opinion

no basis for opinion.

Because you have so much to cover and you’re

often facing the screen, you don't seem to notice

when some students are confused, or have

questions, or think you’re going too fast.

The way you do presentations in class helps

stimulate class discussion

Putting what students say on screen during class

discussions provides me with a useful study notes

from the event

Alternating between presentations and small

group discussions has really helped us understand

what you’re teaching.

Knowing that our work may be put on screen or

online for others to see has made me work harder

in this course.

.

Putting what students say or write on screen

during class is embarrassing and intimidating. I

wish you would stop doing it.

Putting computer materials on screen is

appropriate for a small class like ours.

The presentation contained about the right

amount of facts and details

The material you showed about {x} confused me

about {y}.

The material you showed about [x] helped me to

understand [y]

Online Class Materials and other Questions about Study

By “Online class materials,” we mean handouts Neither No

and notes taken during class that are available to

you online after that class ends.

SD D Agree or A SA Basis

These next items refer to how you study before, Disagree For

and after, classroom sessions. Please indicate how Opinion

strongly you disagree or agree with each of the

following statements.

I usually review the online classroom materials

within a week after that classroom session.

I usually review the online course materials and

notes just before a quiz or exam.

I don’t usually look at online class materials.

When I review the online class materials, it helps

me learn

Being able to see some of the online class

materials BEFORE that meeting of the class

helped me prepare for that class

When I tried to review your lecture materials

online, I had problems finding them online.

Teaching & Learning Interactions

Compare this course with other courses you have Neither No

taken that made little or no use of computers in

the classroom (“no tech classrooms”). As you

SD D Agree or A SA basis

compare this course with no-tech classroom Disagree for

courses, indicate how strongly you agree or Opinion

disagree with each of the following statements.

1=(strongly disagree) to

5= (strongly agree); or no basis for opinion.

The instructor pays enough attention to the class

when using presentation instead of looking at the

presentation himself/herself.

The instructor asks us questions and can

spontaneously use materials on screen to respond

to what we say.

I avoid asking for clarification when I don't

understand something because I don't want to

disrupt the flow of the slide presentation

I don’t need to talk much with the instructor

because course material in lectures is clearly

presented

This course spends about the right amount of time

on lectures compared with other class activities

(e.g.. discussion, classroom work on projects,

work in teams, lab exercises, etc....)

If you answered "disagree" or "strongly disagree", on what should we spend more classroom time?

Course Outcomes

Indicate the extent to which you believe that the Not To A

following activities have helped you understand course At Great

content. Circle the number where 1 means "not at all" All Extent

and 5 means "to a great extent". -1- -2- - 3- -4-

Computer presentations during lecture sessions

Interactions between the instructor and students during

computer presentation

My ability to see the computer presentation before the

class meets.

My ability to review the computer presentation after the

class meets

The use of animations to illustrate complex concepts

The use of pictures to provide visual context for content

The use of audio to provide realistic subject context

Technical Issues

Neither No

SD D Agree or A SA basis

Disagree for

Opinion

Technical problems in the class room have been so

distracting that they really interfered with my

learning in this course.

Technical problems outside the classroom (e.g.,

course management system, e-mail, my own

computer0 have been so distracting that they really

interfered with my learning in this course.

Overall Impression

All things considered, I learned much more because

of the ways we took advantage of the technology in

this classroom.
