Gujarat first to pass women’s empowerment Bill for 50% reservation in local bodies, but
denied assent despite Governor being a woman – Narendra Modi
Chief Minister Narendra Modi today resolved to ensure that Gujarat gets 50 per cent
reservation for women in local self-government bodies and panchayats.
Addressing a huge women’s rally at Bhavnagar on the eve of 63rd Republic Day, he
recalled that Gujarat is the first state in the country to have passed women’s
empowerment Bill in the Legislative Assembly for 50 per cent reservation in the local
bodies, but it has been denied assent despite the state’s Governor being a woman. He
would not wait till the Act comes into force.
Gujarat has already started several unique projects for women during the last ten years,
including ‘Mission Mangalam’ for women’s economic empowerment, ‘Girls Enrolment’ and
‘Reduce School Dropout Rate’ drives, waiving stamp duty and registration fee for women
buying family property. He said that the ‘Save Girl Child’ campaign in the state has
resulted in reversing the adverse gender ratio from 827 to 906 females per every 1,000
males.
Mr. Modi earlier inaugurated LED message display panel under e-Prasar Project to
connect 111 village panchayats in the district. He also inaugurated Village Self-
Employment Centre’s Help Line Number, loans for which were approved by SBI. DDO
and other officers handed over cheques worth Rs.12.75-lakh. The display panel would
show important messages across the district in fraction of a minute.
