Personal Review: Devdas starring Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri
Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, Jackie Shroff, Kiron Kher
In fact, I didn't know what to think before viewing Devdas. After the first
time of watching, I didn't know quite what to make of it and doubted I'd
watch it again. The next day, I remembered it had some good songs so I
watched those... and now I've seen it I don't know how many times. The
music and the story really grew on me. I'm relatively new to Bollywood and
let's just say I've grown accustomed to the feel-good-fluff. Devdas,
however, is not. It may start out that way, but it's mainly a story about a
man's ruination after he commits a wrong that will separate him and his
love forever.
I won't say more about the plot. I felt that Shah Rukh Khan did a really
great job of stepping into the impractical shoes of Devdas. I haven't seen a
whole lot of him, other than Paheli, but I liked him contrary to complaints of
his over-the-top acting style. Madhuri Dixit portrays tenderness and strong-
will in her role of gold-hearted prostitute, Chaundramukhi. Some of her
scenes absolutely break my heart in sadness or joy. I've seen a lot from
Aishwarya Rai, and she can go either way in her movies. I like when she
works with Sanjay Leela Bhansali because he gives her well-rounded roles
that suit her coquettish personality. I first saw her in Hum Dil De Chuke
Sanam as the stubborn Nandini, and now she stars as Devdas's lost love,
Paro. She shows range as, on one hand, she's full of youth and adorable
charms, and the next she's a sophisticated yet stricken, miserable Choti -
Ma. The scenes and songs are breathtaking. I think one of the few reasons
I got through the films mounting sadness was because the sets an d
costumes were so beautiful and glowing.
Take in mind that Bollywood isn't for everyone, espcially Sanjay Leela
Bhansali. I think he's a creative genius because he portrays emotion
perfectly in his movies. They step outside the normal world to express
actions and words we wouldn't normally do or say. The style is
melodramatic and, if this isn't your cup of tea, then I'd stay away from
mainstream Bollywood altogether. What I love about the style, however, is
that even if it's beyond reality it touches my heart with it's personal truths
and understanding. Growing up, I have always felt that I must show
contempt for everything that is emotional because it's "lame." With movies
like Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, just to name a few, I've had
the opportunity to love something completely beyond my everyday world
yet inexplicably familiar to me.
