Google isn't the only place people search for content online anymore. They search on YouTube,
Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, as well as Google, which still connects us with the old standard
venues like article directories and blogs. So what's important now - if you have a business website
and want to be found online -- is having keyword optimized content in as many places as possible
online.
The best way to accomplish that is to have an effective strategic content marketing system in
place that allows you to create and publish keyword-rich content on a regular basis. My approach
includes both long term planning and publishing content on a regular basis. Here's an overview:
Phase 1: Content Planning
First, do the keyword research for my site. This provides the keywords and anchor links to include
in each piece of content that gets published, whether for on-page SEO (on your website) or for off-
page SEO (on another website).
When the keywords have been identified, create a 'Resource' section on your website where the
content will be published. Some webmasters may identify this section as 'Blog' or 'Articles' - it
doesn't really matter. The point is to have a central place on the website to curate content so that
site visitors can find it easily, and you can control the linking easily.
At the same time, create accounts on the social media sites that you want to publish content on for
off-site SEO (backlinks). At the very minimum, you'll need an account on Twitter and Facebook, as
well as a few accounts on article directories like EzineArticles.com.
Next, create an editorial calendar. This is simply a 12-month overview of the topics you want to
create content on and a schedule for when to publish it. By planning over the course of a year, you
can target multiple keywords for my site. The content gets 'dripped' out so that every month there's
fresh content on the website, as well as fresh backlinks off-site to help the site grow organically.
Phase 2: Content Creation
Once the research and set up is finished, the content can be created on a regular basis, and
published according to the schedule you set up. Remember that the goal is to create and distribute
content around the internet to as many places as possible where your target audience will be likely
to find it.
The system starts with creating one keyword-optimized article posted on your website. Then,
using that same article, you'll create even more content for backlinks and off-site SEO. That
additional content will be published on other sites (like article directories) and syndicated in RSS
feeds that appear on blogs and social media sites, creating even more backlinks and opportunities
for visitors to find your website.
Here are the steps:
First, write an article on a topic that interests your target market. Optimize it with the appropriate
keywords.
Then publish it on your website in a 'Resource' section. Make sure the web page is optimized with
title tag, description tag and (optionally) keyword tag.
Submit the article to the article directories of your choice, making sure to include anchor links to
the original article -- either in your author's box or in the body of the text if the directory allows that.
Now, chop the article into two shorter blog posts, and publish them on your blog (if you have one
on a separate domain), or a free blogging site like Blogger or WordPress.com. Be sure to include
anchor links that point back to the original article.
Write and publish a Tweet on Twitter announcing the new article on your website. Include a link to
the article, and a keyword optimized hash tag in the Tweet. The link creates a backlink to your
website page, and the hash tag helps people who search Twitter using keywords find the Tweet.
Publish the blog posts (at separate intervals) on the wall of your Facebook page. Include a call to
action asking people to 'Like' the post and share it with their friends.
At this point, it's easy to see that by writing one keyword-optimized article per week -- and
following this content publishing schedule on a weekly basis -- your content (and backlinks) will
spread virally around the internet. Each original web page will move up in the SERPs so that
people can find it more easily. Your overall website ranking will improve from the accumulation of
backlinks, and the traffic to your website will multiply with each publication.
