WELCOME!
Hello and welcome to the fourth feature-packed edition of the Raven‟s
Eye, the only magazine celebrating the fantastic fantasy CBBC kid‟s show
– Raven. Let‟s see what I‟ve got in store for you this month:
In Warrior Feature, we will be reviewing Kenra from Series 2. She just
missed out on getting to the final week, and she was just beaten by
Grema and Varna, two very strong warriors. What did she lose? What did
she win? You‟ll have to read to find out…
Jake Collins gives us the second of his Challenge Features, this time he
returns with Thrall Demons.
Gemma and Alexander have both sent me poems about their favourite
warriors; Dejan and Versad, both of these will be in the issue.
There is also a new Top Trumps feature, in which you can print off the
cards to play yourself!
We have our third Warrior Links puzzle. Can you get the link this time?
Also, I have supplied an extremely difficult „Warrior Dingbats‟ puzzle.
Only the best will get them right!
The tension is really hotting up in Alaunus. Raven and Erina have set off
on their mission to find the leaf. Will they succeed?
We have some small debates for you to vote over and Sohar will reveal
the true personalities of the Secret Temple warriors! Find Part 1 of the
fantastic exposé in this issue!
Find out if boys or girls are better at Raven and there will be the usual
Warrior Vote, find out which 6 warriors have made the final week.
And there is now a big competition that you can join, with the prize of a
signed picture of Lindsay McKenzie, who of course plays Princess Erina!
You can join up for it now! Read the article in the magazine for details.
Here is the usual acknowledgement to Jake Collins and his „The Eye
Shield‟ fanzine, which is based around the kids‟ game show Knightmare. A
lot of ideas for The Raven‟s Eye come from him. The Eye Shield can be
viewed at www.knightmare.com/tes.

TV UPDATE
At this point in the magazine I update you with the Raven that will be on

reason, so the episodes in Series 4 seem to be wrong, but they are
actually right. I also apologise for the dates in last month‟s TV Update –
they were all a day out! I will try and provide you with correct dates in
the future!

About Kenra
Kenra was a warrior from Series 2 Week 1. She seemed nothing special
as the week began but she grew in confidence to become a very capable
warrior. One of her best moments was when she helped Grema to win
Thrall Demons, after failing the first time. By the end of the week,
people thought that Kenra could have gone further with more confidence.
She was a great sport in defeat, saying that the best warriors went
through. This is how she did:

CHALLENGE feature – thrall
demons
Jake Collins once again supplies challenge Feature this month. Enjoy his
recount of one of his favourite challenges, Thrall Demons from Series 1-
6!
As their name suggests, Thrall Demons are one of several types of demon
that are "under a magic spell", which means that they will only attack a
warrior under certain circumstances, i.e. if the spell is broken. In this
case, the challenge is for the warrior to make their way through a maze
of threads, which is hung with lots of small bells, collecting treasure rings
along the way. If the warrior touches a thread and a bell rings, the spell
is broken and the demons awaken, causing the unlucky warrior to be taken
by the nearest demon, and therefore lose a life.
As if this were not tricky enough, the warrior is blindfolded as they make
their way through the threads. All the ducking, sidestepping and taking
huge steps over threads on the floor is made doubly harder by the fact
that the warrior cannot see what they are doing! To help them cope, they
are always guided by the voice of another. This just goes to prove that
the spell that enthrals the demons can only be broken by the particular
clanging sound of the bells ringing, and not by human voices.
This challenge first appeared in the final episode of series 1. Intho,
Lamar and Brhea faced the Thrall Demons in Raven's Lair, with Raven
himself giving them a set of pre-arranged instructions to evade the
demons successfully. To help the warriors cope, their legs were chained
together to show them how big a step they needed to take when Raven
told them to take a certain number of steps in a particular direction, and
there was a series of flagstones on the floor that they had to follow with
their feet. The reward for success was a single treasure ring at the end
of the maze, and the return of a life. Lamar and Intho completed this
challenge successfully, but Brhea hit a thread and woke the demons.
As with many Series 1 challenges, Thrall Demons was adapted and
improved for series 2. It became one of the Wizard's Tower challenges
(along with The Wizard's Maze and, in series 3, Gold Rush) and had to be
faced twice each week, on Wednesday and Thursday, by the leading
warrior. Very much like with the Riddle Path in series 1, the leader would
choose one warrior to guide them safely through the threads. The leader
would often choose a warrior who was very low on the leader board, and
would not be able to catch up with an extra treasure ring or two. In fact,
the guider was faced with more of a challenge than the warrior who was
actually in there with the demons, as tricky instructions had to be worked
out and relayed successfully. A lot of guiders found this too hard and
caused the leader to wake the demons and lose a life, but I'm sure no one
actually did this on purpose as a very dirty tactic, as it is sometimes
tempting to suspect. On one or two occasions, the leader and the second-
placed warrior were forced to face this challenge together, with lives on
the line for both guider and demon-walker, which was perhaps a fairer
way to do it.
The challenge was harder in the Wizard's Tower than in Raven's Lair, as
there were three treasure rings to pick up and some very awkward
manoeuvres along the way, the worst of which was a rectangular golden
gate just before the final treasure ring. The warrior would have to duck
down and step carefully over the metal bar at the bottom of the gate,
otherwise the two bells that were attached to the top would ring and the
challenge would be over at the last hurdle. Thrall Demons was so tricky, in
fact, that Series 6 had confined it solely to the final week once more, for
only the most skilful warriors to face.
I'm sure it would have been all too easy for a warrior who had lost a life
on Thrall Demons to blame their guider, but in the first week of Series 2,
eventual series champion Grema (who had an excellent mindset about the
whole thing) showed us a sensible and eventually successful way to deal
with the Thrall Demons. She chose Kenra to guide her on Wednesday, but
Kenra made a small error of judgment that caused Grema to step on a
thread. The next day, rather than holding this mistake against her,
Grema chose Kenra again, and the pair worked and communicated
together perfectly. They learned from their mistake of the previous day
and put it right, going on to win the challenge. They even coped brilliantly
with the golden gate, which could so easily have proved too much for
Grema as she was so tall that she could easily have hit it with just one
false move. Grema rewarded Kenra by giving her all three rings, which was
a generous and fitting gesture, and just went to prove Grema's suitability
as a champion, as she had grace as well as skill.
I've always liked Thrall Demons a lot, not least because it reminds me of
Knightmare, what with all that "sidestep left" and so on. However, I think
it is an excellent challenge in its own right, and is important to build
teamwork and co-operation skills between the warriors, which a lot of
them do need to work on sometimes, it has to be said. Thrall Demons have
also turned up in some form in both The Island and The Secret Temple,
so obviously the Raven production team likes them too. This leads me to
ask the inevitable question, why were there no Thrall Demons in Series 7?
Bring them back at once, please!
Thanks to Jake for his detailed recount of the challenge! He may return
next month with Dark Path, or maybe I will wear the Challenge Feature
shoes again! We‟ll have to wait and see…
POETRY CORNER
dejan
Our first poem this month is written by Gemma, raven1990 from the
Raven Forum. Here it is:
On the very first week of Series Four,
An unbeatable warrior began to soar,
Beating all he was against,
For he was the master of defence,
On the final day of Week One,
For he and Sarla, who was the sun,
Stepped through the portal to the next round,
Sending Melja homeward bound,
In Week Four he was unbeatable,
Even to Kinsa, Week 2's undefeatable,
Holding the record for lives and rings,
He'd become the Raven King,
But on the final day his dream,
Was shattered and, boy, did I scream!
For Linma had just got ahead,
"No way!" I yelled, bashing my head,
Although he was robbed on that day,
He's still my champion anyway.
Versad
Alexander writes our second poem, about his favourite warrior Versad.
Versad was ready for this quest,
But it put him to the test,
He battled bravely and fought away,
Until he got to the final day,
He went through to the final week,
No one could think that he was a geek,
The final challenge now comes his way,
Will this now be his day?
When Versad got to the portal at the end,
Hanso went "round the bend".
Seriously raven!

Raven top trumps
Raven the secret temple
As part of a new feature in the magazine, I am going to put some top
trumps up that you can print and play. Each issue, I will publish a set of
top trump cards for a different series. I hope you agree with the stats,
and if you need help on how to play the game, email me at
thompsons.mk@virgin.net. Enjoy playing! Enlarge the cards
if you wish to print them.
Hopefully Raven Top Trumps will return next week with Series 1. The
statistics will be based on how the warriors do in certain challenges. For
example, if a warrior wins at Stepping Stones, they go up a point in agility.
PUZZLe – warrior dingbats
See if you can guess the warriors that each of these, well things, suggest.
There are pictures and words to help you find the warrior suggested by
each picture. They are very hard, so only the best will get them!

Alaunus – chapter 4 –
unknown powers
We now return to Alaunus, the fable from Raven‟s homeland. Here is an
overview for you lot that haven‟t been following the story so far:
Chapter 1 – The Quiet Days
Raven dares Erina to climb Mount Zoat with him. They come to a cave and
find a blue spirit called Haryad.
“My name is Haryad, what are you doing visiting me?”
Chapter 2 – Haryad’s Cave
Haryad tells them that they have smudged his „wall drawings‟. Erina asks
if they can repay him in anyway. He says that there is:
“There is a leaf in the fortress that will return me to my former human
self. Return the leaf to me and I will be human once more!”
He explains that he got into a row with demons, and they turned him into
a spirit. As they leave, Raven is keen to investigate the cave drawings,
whereas Erina is keen to get the leaf as soon as possible. As they walk
back home, however, they come across demons…
„They tripped backwards as the demon approached, getting closer,
closer…‟
Chapter 3 – Demon Attack
Raven pleas for Erina to run, but she will not desert him. Raven is
surrounded by demons; he is powerless to stop them. One appears right
behind Erina, making her climb the tree in fright. She refuses to jump
out the tree and get Cyrus.
“I will not desert you Raven!”
The branch Erina is sitting on snaps clean in two, just as she grasps onto
the branch above. This distracts the demons, and Raven has a chance to
run for Cyrus. He brings Cyrus to Erina, and Cyrus used a spell to make
the demons retreat.
They return to Cyrus‟ tower for a cup of tea. Cyrus tells them that the
cave drawings will not be important. They tell him about their mission to
find the leaf. He tells them that he can‟t accompany them on their
mission, but he wishes them good luck…
We now continue the story with Chapter 4 – Unknown Powers:
Raven and Erina leave Cyrus‟ tower, feeling nervous but determined.
They, especially Erina, were resolute on their mission to find the leaf in
the fortress. It would return Haryad to his former human form.
Raven and Erina, finally approached the fortress, after walking for a good
three hours. It looked grim and dull now that it was rarely used.
“I wish this fortress could be returned to its former glory,” Erina told
Raven, “when I lived in it, flags were flying of my father‟s colour. It was
a home to us. Then, an old hag from a distant land arrived on the island
and got into a row with my father over the ownership of the island. She
said she had discovered it years and years ago. My father retaliated and
argued back that she should not have left the island if she wanted it as
her own. The old hag grew angry and forced our family out of the
fortress. We bought the cottage that we now live in. That hermit now
owns the fortress, but her whereabouts are unknown. I just wish we
could defeat her!”
“Finding the leaf could be the first step to defeating the old hag, Erina.
You must be patient,” Raven told her.
Raven and Erina approached the fortress carefully, in case anyone was on
guard. Erina peered round the corner of the fortress to check the
entrance and quickly retreated back.
“There‟s a demon standing by the doorway, Raven! How will we get in?”
“Don‟t panic,” Raven told her, “I have heard from Cyrus how to defeat one
demon. It was a spell of some sort, but I can‟t remember what it is.
Anyhow, he said never to use it because I am not strong enough yet.”
“Raven, this is important,” Erina pleaded, “please use the spell!”
“But I can‟t remember what it is! We will have to settle for throwing a
good, hard rock at the demon and seeing what happens.”
“Won‟t that anger him?”
”It‟s our only hope. We must be careful to retreat straight back as soon
as we have thrown the rock. I will try first.”
Raven picked up a large, solid rock off the floor and prepared to throw it
at the demon.
“Wish me luck…” He hurled it straight at the demon, hitting him squarely
in the chest.
“Good one!” Erina complimented Raven, “let‟s go… oh no!” The demon was
walking straight to them.
“Go Erina, go!” Raven shouted, “go ahead into the fortress, I‟ll catch up
with you later!”
Erina was reluctant, but she knew from her previous experience that she
must trust Raven‟s every word. She ran straight into the fortress
entrance while she had the chance, leaving the demon to approach Raven.
She regretted her decision to desert him as soon as she entered the
fortress. But now, she must sit and wait, or put them both in peril.
Raven tried to remain calm as the demon approached. What was the spell
again? He could just not remember. Raven concentrated hard on escaping
the demon, he put his entire mind to just seeing Erina again, being out of
peril. As he focused on the task at hand, he felt himself shrink. He was
decreasing in size! What was happening? Was this some trick of the
demon? Raven looked down at his feet and saw that he was… a raven. So,
this was where he got his name. He always assumed that he was called
Raven because his parents liked the sound of it. Had he always had this
power? How had he suddenly turned into a raven? Raven didn‟t have long
to ponder this and took his opportunity to fly straight over the demon
and into the fortress. He transformed back into a man, right in front of
Erina‟s eyes.
“What the?” Erina gasped, “how…?”
“Quickly,” Raven panted, “let‟s get deeper into the fortress before the
demon returns!”
As they ran into an inner chamber of the fortress, Erina harassed Raven
for answers.
“What happened back there in the entrance hall? Did you really
transform from a raven?”
“I don‟t quite believe it myself,” said Raven, thinking, “maybe Cyrus will
know. However, we must continue on our quest for the leaf. We… what?”
Erina was looking at Raven in an odd way. “You look different…”
“Do I?”
“Yes, you look…
“What?”
“More raven-like…”
“Maybe transforming took its toll on me, maybe I will look more like a
raven in human form every time I transform. I will have to limit my
transformation from now on until I find out about it from Cyrus.
Actually, I‟m not quite sure how I did it… Anyway, let‟s continue.”
Raven and Erina continued into the next chamber of the fortress in
search of the precious leaf. The light was dimming as they passed
through the fortress. There was now a roof above their head, and four
walls around them. They seemed to have entered some kind of dungeon.
They tried to open the next door, but found that it was locked.
Raven kicked the door in his anger, but the door would not open. He
nursed his stubbed toe.
“I knew this was a bad idea!” he raged, “what if the spirit has led us into a
trap?”
“Remain patient, Raven, the…” Erina began but her words were brought to
a halt when the door slammed behind them.
They were trapped.
Will Raven and Erina escape the trapped room? Will they get the leaf for
Haryad? Will the old hag spot them? And what of Raven‟s special powers?
Find out in Chapter 5 of Alaunus, only in The Raven‟s Eye…
The small debates
This issue, we will be debating over some small matters in Raven. They
are small details, but they might cause to have big debates. So, here is
the first small debate:
Millstone Towers: Dragon eggs or Skulls?
Dragon Eggs are better Skulls are better
There are so many skulls on Raven, Skulls fit in with Raven better.

I personally think that the new Last Stand is better because it tests

to be bigger, but not big enough so that it‟s obvious who will win. It‟s a
tough balance to make.

SOHAR’S RAVEN Exposé PART 1
Sohar from The Secret Temple has sent me a Raven Exposé for your
delight, revealing what the warriors were really like! Enjoy…
Going on Raven was something I had never really considered doing, I had
never been much of a fan before flying out to India for over a month and
generally messing around with a bunch of 15 other kids in front of
cameras – but I‟m glad I did, because to be honest it was amazing!
The thing is though, not everyone is quite who they seem on camera –
some people are a little different off set… So since I‟m killing some time
as revision is not on priority list today here‟s an exposé of India lot…
Eagles – everyone‟s favourite team, bless their hearts
Yeada (Thea Day) – Thea is such a nice girl, she was one of the youngest
on the trip. I met up with Thea before India because she didn‟t go to
Dunoon for the weekend audition, she was found by producer Donna
through an organisation. I shared a room with Thea and she was there on
my birthday at 5am as we ate the few English sweets we had. Thea took
quite a liking to Bisleri as did I, we ended up hiding around 48 bottles
around the room and held a „bisleri party‟.
Secret: Thea was always the last one to everything – she took ages
getting ready.
Taylan (Angus Taylor) – Angus, bless him, is really as nice as everyone
thinks he is. He was really quiet at the start when we were all getting to
know each other but opened up after a while. Gus was really good friends
with Tom (Desot) and they spent a lot of time either „gossiping‟ or trying
to impress the chaperones in the pool.
Secret: Gus did the three headed serpent thing at the end before we did
and got through the whole thing!
Karja (Janhvi Devalekar) – Janhvi I must say had the LOUDEST laugh and
was so distracting in tutoring – not that we paid any attention. She got on
really well with Sanchia (Nebra) despite their ups and downs. At first
Robyn (Yonra) and Janhvi shared a room but one of the mothballs had
started to smell – and when those things go off they don‟t half stink.
Secret: Janhvi also had her eye on someone – as in falling head over heels
for someone…
Samra (Raghav) – I didn‟t get to know Raghav really well as he wasn‟t with
us for a long period of time. He was so clever and an amazing drawer, he
got on very well with Rob Whitmore (Tibor). Raghav probably dressed the
smartest of all the people in India – always at dinner with a shirt.
Secret: Raghav on set used to sing the most annoying song consisting of
two words, „Highest‟ and „Lowest‟.
Panthers – people said they were a dysfunctional team but they were
HILARIOUS!
Sonro (Rob McPherson) – Rob was a really competitive person, constantly
striving to do the best for his team. Off camera he was sometimes a
little disturbing with his games of truth or dare – NOT pretty. He
brought some DVDs, namely Borat – if you‟ve seen it, the chaperones
caught us watching it at just the wrong time.
Secret: Rob took a liking to many of the girls on Raven, and he was not
shy about it.
Yonra (Robyn Leonard) – I <3 Robyn! We first met at Manchester
Piccadilly to get a train to Dunoon. Robyn was the oldest on the trip and
literally like a mum to us all. Robyn was loud, funny, the subject of many
jokes and just generally really nice. The main areas of conversation for
Robyn were food and other peoples‟ problems. Robyn, Thea (Yeada) and I
meet up quite a lot as we all live close. Robyn is an amazing swimmer and
shared a room with Riya (Aksu).
Secret: Robyn recently revealed who she loved while in India, it was – nah,
that would be telling.
Aksu (Supriya Chak) – Riya was a really nice person and a great dancer.
She taught us all how to speak Hindi but the only thing we can now
remember is „Namaste Miram Nam Charlie Hee‟. Riya came from the same
school as Divvy (Hadav) and they were really good friends. She showed us
more of real India, not the Bollywood City Village we were in. Little Italy
was a real favourite of ours! When Sonro was „stripped of his leadership‟
it was because Riya and Robyn (Yonra) were sick of him taking advantage.
Secret: When Riya arrived, Robyn didn‟t know if she could speak English
and started acting out all her words – only for Riya to reply in a laugh!
Arton (Jonny Strachkem) – Jonny was HILARIOUS, which always annoyed
Sonro. He said before he came that he would hate all Indian food – then
he discovered naan bread. When we had room service he ordered 20 naan
bread and several bottles of coke, went completely hyper, started hitting
Rob Mc (Sonro) then fell asleep, falling off his bed. Jonny invented the
Smeagol voice and often made Robyn (Yonra) laugh hilariously on set!
Secret: Jonny was so quiet at the beginning and barely said a word until
we got to India. Also nicknamed „I fART ON you.‟
Read Part 2 in Issue 5 to reveal what the wolves and tigers were really
like!
Raven – boys v girls
I am now going to break the arguments between the genders and settle
once and for all if boys or girls are better at Raven (including spin-offs).
How it works is, I position the warriors for how well they did in their
series. I then add up the positions, and the lowest number wins. Let‟s
use Series 1 as an example.
1st Lamar, 2nd Intho, 3rd Brhea, 4th Bryal, 5th Halei, 6th Hadan, =7th Sejen,
Jeash, Eljam, =10th Gaale, Boyan, Padwy, =13th Daala, Kefra/Racar, Toasa,
=16th Lydav, Adluk, Glema
If the warriors are in joint position, I take the middle value. For
example, if there are two warriors in joint 1st, it counts as 1.5th place for
each. Sejen, Jeash and Eljam are all in joint 7th, so each of them count as
being in 8th.
Therefore, after Series 1 the scores are:
Boys Girls
80 91
That means that boys are in the lead. I am now going to work out the
scores for the rest of series to see who is best – boys or girls?
The numbers in bold indicate which gender was better overall in that
series.
Boys Girls
Series Cumulative Series Cumulative
1 80 80 91 91
2 87 167 84 175
3 92 259 79 254
4 73 332 98 352
The Island 34 366 44 396
5 78 444 93 489
6 107 551 64 553
The Secret Temple 80 631 56 609
7 63 694 108 717
Which means that the boys are better at Raven with the score at 694-
717! It is very close though, at this could easily change in Series 8. Will
the boys keep their top place? We‟ll find out in Series 8…

Puzzle answer
Warrior Dingbats –
Ok, these are hard to explain! I‟ll do my best to explain each one!
1. Gajes
The ear means „sound like‟, so the warrior name will sound like „gadget‟.
The German flag means the country of Germany. If you take the letters
R, M, N and Y out of Germany (because they are crossed out), you get
Gea. Accident and Emergency are often referred to as A & E, so the
arrows next to them indicate that A & E need to be swapped round. You
now have Gae. In the word „maJor‟, the J is a capital letter, showing that
it really means „3rd = J‟. It is the same thing with the other one, meaning
„5th = S‟. This means that the 3rd letter of the warrior is J, and the 5th is
S. Add these letters to Gae, and you get Gajes!
2. Danil
The mountain to the tree means the emblem of the warrior in the first
week, and then in the final week. The two warriors this could be are
Grema and Versad. However, the boy symbol next to them shows that it
is Versad. Beron is the fellow finalist who came from Versad‟s week.
Median success means that you need to find the warrior that was in the
middle of Versad and Beron‟s positions. Look at the final week. Versad
came 1st, Beron came 5th, and so you need to see who came 3rd. It‟s Danil!
3. Lipra
The first picture is of a mouth, or two lips. One is crossed out, so we‟re
left with just „lip‟. The plus symbol shows that there will be more. Then,
it says the „first two letters of the real name of the warrior that sounds
like (the ear) what you do on this, with an arrow pointing to a horse. You
ride a horse, and the warrior that sounds like „ride‟ is „Ridar‟. Then you
need to check the „List of Raven Series‟ article on Wikipedia to find out
his first name. His name is Rauridgh. The first two letters are „RA‟. So
you add this to „Lip‟ and you get Lipra.
If anyone got any of them right, I‟d love to know, so please email me at
thompsons.mk@virgin.net if you got something!
Warrior Links –
As explained by Lee -
The first warrior went out at the same time as their partner in the next
series. Confused? Time for an example. Take Melka and Anmah for
instance. Melka came 3rd in Series 6 Week 2. One series later, in Series
7 Week 2, Anmah came 3rd. Making sense now? Told you it wasn't hard!
SERIES 8 – minor SPOLIER WARNING
Contains details of two challenges
Series 8 Warrior Wexar has sent me details of two challenges from the
new Series 8! It excited me, so I thought I‟d include them here! I didn‟t
want to include them in the Welcome! or the list on the front page, as I
want it to be a reward for you people that read the magazine thoroughly!
Raven’s Rock
2 warriors must abseil down a Cliff and collect two rings on their way
down. They must collect the 2 rings, I they drop one, they loose a life.
There is also one final ring at the Bottom, whichever warrior get that ring
first keeps their 3 rings, whilst the other forfeits a life. Usually done
with the Last Placed 2 Warriors.
Raft Race
2 teams of 3 races against each other to construct a raft made out of
poles and padlocks. Once the raft is constructed, the warriors must sail it
out onto the loch with oars, to grab the 3 rings. The losers must fall in
the water and loose a life.
