me about the Muslim Faith?

University of Colorado Islamic

Specialist, Fred Denny

 “Jihad may include

armed conflict, but

it has strict rules—

one of which is not

to harm innocent

people.”

University of Colorado Islamic

 Add to that the fact

that suicide is

condemned in Islam,

and hijacking

airplanes into

buildings occupied by

office workers is

sincerely and formally

rejected as utterly

inauthentic by the

highest Muslim

Authorities”

Key Words

 Allah: Arabic for God

 Koran (Quran): the Holy Book of

Islam

 Jihad: a Koranic (Quranic) tem for

the legitimate struggle against

aggression or striving for justice

 Mosque: Muslim house of worship

Key Words

 Islam: means “peace through the

submission to the will of Allah (God)”

 Muslim: Follower of Islam

 Muhammad: Islam’s third and final

prophet of God. The first two were

Moses and Jesus

Muhammad

 Born in Mekkah (Mecca) to merchant

family, but orphaned at five

 Grew up to be a caravan manager

under the tutelage of his future wife

Khadija.

 As he grew up Muhammad became

troubled seeing the growing gap

between the rich and the poor of

Mekka (Mecca)

Muhammad

 To calm his agitation Muhammad began to

spend a lot of time in a cave meditating

 During one of these sessions it is said the

archangel Gabriel came down and spoke

to Muhammad, revealing the word of God

to him

 Muhammad came to believe that God had

revealed himself in part through Moses

and Jesus and now God was speaking to

him.

 This became the Koran and Islam was

born

Muhammad

 After his experience with Gabriel in

the hills outside Mekka, Muhammed

returned home to reflect on what

just happened with his wife Khadija.

 Khadija urged Muhammad to follow

Gabriel’s message and she became

the first convert to Islam.

 After 3 years Muhammad had 30

followers.

Muhammad

 After much persicution of him and his

followers Muhammed moved to the city of

Medina, in Islam this became known as

the Hijrah.

 In Medinah, Muhammad’s following

became much larger, so large in fact he

amassed an army large enough to seize

Mekka.

 The Mekkans gave up without much of a

fight and most converted to Islam at that

point.

Muhammad in Mekka

 Upon capturing the city Muhammad visited

a building called the Kaaba, said to have

been built by Abraham and Ishmael.

 Muhammad declared it a shrine to Islam

and two years later Muhammad dies,

leaving a crisis of succession of this

fledgling religion of Islam.

 Islam now encourages all Muslims to

make a pilgrimage to Mekkah, to visit the

Kaaba. Called the hajj.

Islam

 Like Christianity and Judaism, Islam

is Monotheistic.

 Emphasizes salvation

 Offers hope of an Afterlife

 Does not believe it’s first preacher

was divine, just a man like any

other.

 Muhammad is a Prophet, more like

Moses was.
