Star Wars the Old Republic Review

Star Wars the Old Republic, sometimes abbreviated as SWTOR, was just released

on December 20th, 2011. The game has already amassed over 1 million

subscribed players officially making it the fastest growing MMO game ever. Many

players are saying that the game is basically World of Warcraft with a Star Wars

theme. But what really makes this game so entertaining and why is it being taken

so well by the PC gaming community?

SWTOR is set in a time period long before the days of the infamous Darth Vader

or any of the well-known Star Wars characters for that matter. The Empire and

the Republic have signed an agreement, the Treaty of Coruscant, ceasing all war

between the two fleets. Both sides, however, are becoming more and more antsy

and hostility between the two is on the rise yet again. It is almost certain that the

treaty is about to be broken and another war will soon erupt.

This is how the game is setup for the player. You are thrown into the heat of

things where you must choose which fleet you wish to side with for the upcoming

war. Both the Empire and the Republic have four main classes and two advanced

class specializations for each core class. The Imperial core classes include: Bounty

Hunter, Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent and Sith Inquisitor. The Republic core classes,

on the other hand, are: Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular.

As previously mentioned, each of the core classes is then broken down into two

advanced classes. This only happens once you reach level 10. Specialization

classes are generally more powerful and have unique abilities. To successfully

select one that will satisfy you, you will need to take your playing style into

consideration along with what role you'd like to play on the battlefield. Some

classes are built for primarily defensive purposes while others are designed for

offensive or even stealth operations. Your choice of class will affect both how you

are able to play the game as well as how the game progresses in story.

Star Wars the Old Republic features many different game modes, per se, that a

player can partake in. There are standard quests, flashpoints (more commonly

known as raids to MMO players) and player versus player (PvP) battles. All require

different strategies and techniques to complete successfully. As the player

progresses through these many new armor pieces, weapons and other useful

items will become available. At level 15 or so you will even receive your own

starship that you can use to discover new planets and partake in interstellar

battles.

Overall, SWTOR is a solid game. It has every aspect of a well rounded MMO and is

already gaining the attention of the majority of the indsutry. Soon, this game

could very well take over the top spot, surpassing the likes of World of Warcraft in

subscribers and popularity.
