Animal Technician II

ANIMAL TECHNICIAN
Job Summary
Perform duties and maintain facilities and equipment associated with the care and use of
laboratory animals in medial research in accordance with federal, state and local laws and
procedures.
Under general supervision, perform preventive animal health maintenance duties such as tooth
cleaning and nail trimming. Independently perform routine animal care duties such as preparing
animal quarters in accordance with specified procedures.
Duties
Animal Care
Feed and water animals (monkeys and other species of nonhuman primates) in accordance
with departmental policy and prescribed diets and instructions;
Empty Bedding pans and cages/enclosures of bedding and feces utilizing scrapers, brushes,
hoses, dust pans, brooms and other cleaning equipment;
Clean (remove organic materials) and sanitize bedding pans and cages/enclosures utilizing
soaps, detergents, cage washers, autoclaves, scrapers, brushes, hoses, power sprayers, and
other cleaning equipment.
Inspect and maintain animal caging, pens and other enclosures in accordance with
departmental policy and procedure. Including but not limited to cleaning, sanitizing,
sterilizing, maintenance, repair and storage of caging, equipment, instruments and other
items associated with the housing and care of laboratory animals.
Maintain separate housing according to viral status; observe precautions to avoid cross-
contamination;
Handle, restrain and manipulate various animals according to established training and
education, and in accordance to federal, state and local laws and procedures.
Provide environmental enrichment to nonhuman primates according to established
procedures; document completion of enrichment tasks;
Perform husbandry associated with breeding and set up of animal social groups in cages and
compound settings. Perform animal capture as instructed.
Assist in veterinary care: performing fecal and urine collection; teeth cleaning and nail
trimming, and parasite treatment. Administer oral, topical and ophthalmalic medications as
directed. Perform animal tattoo identification as instructed.
Observe and report on animals and animal areas for health, abnormalities, changes,
behaviors, alterations, deviations, etc. Collect data, record and document observations and
reports
Equipment/Facilities Operation/Maintenance
Maintain buildings, animal facilities, animal housing rooms, grounds and vehicles and other
property in accordance with University and departmental policy and procedure. Including but

not limited to ensuring temperature, humidity, lighting and water supply remain within
acceptable ranges.
Operate cage washers, autoclaves, cage lifts, and/or other equipment in accordance with
established procedures;
Maintain equipment and premises; ensure that temperature, water pressure, humidity and
lighting remain within acceptable ranges; read and record data; report deviations;
Animal Research/Administrative Duties
Assist in research protocols. Consult with research investigators.
Perform administrative duties such as answer telephone, take messages, deliver mail, file,
etc.
Train Animal Technician Is and instruct/teach others, either formally or informally.
Perform related duties as assigned.

split days off, weekends, on-call, intermittent, etc.
Willing to undergo health screening: Comply with health
screening requirements by undergoing a medical
screening to determine eligibility for required
immunizations or providing documentation of
immunization compliance.
Punctuality: Able to start work at the beginning of the
work shift and maintain a regular work schedule.
High-pressure environment: Willing and able to work in a
high-pressure environment.
