                   ASB Student Council/Leadership Class
                               Application
The student council of Ponderosa High School is composed of 16 elected and 10-18 appointed
positions. Students interested in serving as a member of student council must be willing to
commit their time and efforts in this endeavor. Student Council members are required and
expected to work during lunch and after school as the need arises. You must be able to balance
your academic studies, extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, …) and the demands of being a
student leader. Student Council members are held to a higher degree of expectation as outlined
in the code of ethics found in this application packet. Students that have jobs or other conflicts,
and those wishing to take leadership merely for a college application, are not encouraged to
apply. For those students that want to work to make a significant difference in their high
school, it is a rewarding and challenging experience.

Working with the Director of Student Activities and the Site and District Administration, the
student council demonstrates leadership by organizing and completing many activities on
campus (dances, rallies, spirit weeks, community service projects, etc.). The leadership class
meets fifth period and the time in class is used to promote leadership lessons in areas such as
team building, public speaking, time management, meeting skills, budgeting, and conflict
resolution. This is also the time when student council meeting are held and decisions are made
that impact the students of Ponderosa. You must be elected or appointed to student council in
order to be in the class.

Please read the class description that is included in this application. It is extremely important to
note that there are times when your participation during off school hours is required and your
academic grade in the class as well as future in the class depend on your dependability and work
ethic. Every year several students are not able to take leadership due to the limited size of the
class. Make sure you are willing to show up, work to the best of your ability, and be
dependable before taking on the responsibility of serving on the student council.

With that said, if you meet the criteria described, I encourage you to take an active role in your
school by joining student council. It is a fun and rewarding experience with lessons that will
benefit you for a lifetime. Please see me if you have any questions.

Mr. Burghardt
Student Activities Director

                                                8
future in the class depends on my dependability and work ethic. I therefore commit to these
responsibilities and state that I am willing to serve as a member of Ponderosa’s Student Council.

PONDEROSA HIGH SCHOOL -STUDENT CODE OF ETHICS

A code of ethics is an expression of those personal values that should guide an individual's daily
activities.

In all my actions as an elected member of the Ponderosa High School Associated Student Body, my
first obligation is to the students that I was elected to serve. My responsibility to those students will be
an unswaying effort to better their campus life. This commitment will be for all of those whom I was
elected to represent regardless of race, religion, national origin, or other personal obligation.

I am committed to:
The School I am responsible to all students of the school and not solely to
those who elected me: nor to any organization to which I may be a member.

Individuals have a direct concern for every student in the school. As an integral part of my duties, I
represent the authority and responsibility of the associated Student Body Government. This
represents the authority of the majority and must be exercised with as much concern for the least
influential as well as the most influential member of the student body.

Students My actions as a student body member may affect the morale and assertiveness of students to
perform to the best of their ability and should encourage their educational development. As a student
leader, I should also do my best to perform at my own capability and set a good example for all
students.

Rules-Policies I must be aware and comply with the ASB constitution and by-laws, and all other
school policies. My position does not allow me special privileges.

Decision Making It is my obligation, under the constitution and by-laws of the student government,
to participate in decisions pertaining to the student body. As an elected officer of the students, I can
neither relinquish nor delegate this responsibility to any other individual.

Understanding and acting upon the foregoing promises, I shall:

1. Consider my position as a student body officer as a trust and not use it for personal gain.

2. Be constantly aware of my position of student leader, and thereby always act in a manner that
demonstrates self and school pride.

3. Solicit ideas and opinions from all students of the school and work to incorporate their views in the

                                                     9
deliberations and decisions of the Student Council.

4. Devote sufficient time, thought, and commitment to my student government responsibilities to
insure that the goals of the student council will be accomplished.

5. Remember that the basic function of Student Council is to serve the best interest of the
students.

6. Avail myself of the opportunities for development of my potential as a student leader through
participation in workshops, hands on experience and other educational situations available to me.

7. Remain conscious of the view of others have of my actions and do my best to be a good role model
for others to follow.

8. Maintain a "C" grade point average with no "F's". I realize that I will be removed from office and
the leadership class upon failure to do this.

9. Refrain from the use, association or possession of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, narcotics, or
hallucinating agents. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate removal from office for the
remainder of the year.

10. Obey all school rules, policies, and all laws of the community. Should my actions at school or in
the community ever result in conviction of a crime, or suspensions from school, I shall expect to be
removed from office for the remainder of the year.

The rules and regulation in this code shall apply to any violation, on and off school premises at any time,
during the entire year in which I am holding office.

I understand that I will be removed from my position and the leadership class upon violating the code of
ethics. If I have been unjustly removed, an ethics appeal committee will be organized to review any decisions
concerning removal from the office if the student wishes to appeal the decisions. The appeal committee will
consist of seven voting members and two advisory members. The voting members will be three teachers,
three student council members, and one administrator; the advisory members will be the activities director
and the counselor of the student.
