The Garden County Map Project
Goals:
1. To graphically convey Garden County’s impact in the wider world by mapping
the location of people who have a strong connection to GC – current residents,
alums who live elsewhere, folks who at some time in their life lived in Garden
County, people who are connected through family and friends, or folks who are
just “fans.”
2. Give life to map flags by a pop-up window with personal details (subject to
privacy settings.)
3. Encourage “Mappees” to become part of the GC Social Network, and to offer
them the opportunity to participate in one or more of the Grow Garden County
Working Groups.
4. Offer several levels of privacy, perhaps keyed off the social network privacy
settings.
5. Include mechanism to track contest “referrals”
Methodology:
Potential “map-ees” are directed to an online website form (see next page.)
Map-ees are invited to fill out a simple online form with firstname. Lastname,
street address (?), zipcode, referrer code, and personal message (30-40
characters – i.e., “alum – GCHS, 2008; or GC resident: 1992 – 2004; friends of
the Rogers family of Lewellen )
Each signup will be represented by a flag on the map. There can be different
colors to represent different categories (residents, alums, fans, etc.) Visitors to
the map page will be able to turn category displays on and off (see only alums, or
only former residents, for example.) Clicking on a flag will display the name and
personal greeting.
We will have to decide if we want to automatically register each map-ee into the
Social Network. (Of course we would give them an opt-out message before we
do that.) That would help to build the network and automatically add them to the
SN email list.
There might be a provision on the form to check a privacy setting – INVISIBLE
for no name or message, SHOW TO FRIENDS – only visible to friends, SHOW
ALL. Map-ees can create a flag with varying degrees of disclosure. (If they
choose not to join the SN, that would eliminate the SHOW TO FRIENDS
category.)
Issues:
Map by Zipcode or Street Address – mapping by zipcode means less data
entry and more map clustering, especially if visitors zoom in on Garden County.
Mappees may feel safer using only zipcode.
Enroll in Social Network or no? - shorter forms generally mean higher
participation, but it would be good to capture as many Social Network signups as
we can while we have their attention. (Might be good to include a brief
description of what joining means, something like “Gives you full privileges to
explore and participate on the Grow Garden County website. We promise to
send you no more than two email messages a month about the Centennial
celebration and other GC updates, unless you explicitly ask for more by joining a
group on the site.)
Pitch the Interest Groups? - same caveats as above.
