Govt to import 50 lakh tonnes of raw sugar: India, the world’s second-biggest producer of sugar after Brazil, has contracted to import 50 lakh tonnes of raw sugar in the current year to bridge deficit in supply and curb rising prices. “Regarding the requirement of sugar to import, I understand that 24 lakh tonnes of raw sugar has already been imported and that contracts are almost finalised for another 26 lakh tonnes of raw sugar,” agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday told at the Annual General Meeting of the National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories. India, also the world’s largest sugar consumer, is importing raw sugar as production is estimated to decline at 150 lakh tonnes in the current season from 264 lakh tonnes in 2007-08 season (October to September). Meanwhile, sugar demand is estimated to be 233-240 lakh tonnes in the country. Updating current crop situation, Mr Pawar said most of the sugarcane producing states have received good rainfall as well as sunshine during August-September. “We therefore expect this will help in not only improving the yield of sugarcane per hectare but should also improve sucrose formation in the sugarcane, thereby improving the overall production of sugarcane and sugar,” he said. Food prices surging on poor monsoon; WPI falls: Food prices surged nearly 15 percent in the year ended August as a poor monsoon hit crops, but analysts said moderate price pressures elsewhere in the economy meant an interest rate rise was unlikely for now. The annual change in the overall wholesale price index was negative on Aug. 29 for a 13th week, although a return to inflation looked imminent in September as the effect of last year's high fuel and commodity prices fade out of calculations. The WPI fell 0.12 percent in year to Aug. 29, close to expectations and slowing from the previous week's 0.21 percent fall. However, the food articles sub-index rose an annual 14.8 percent, up from the previous week's 14.5 percent rise. Food prices have surged as drought has hit nearly half of India's districts, hurting summer crops and forcing the government to take steps to bolster supplies. The weakest monsoon in nearly four decades could also hurt the winter crop, keeping pressure on prices in coming months. Sugar prices have continued to rise despite the government cracking down on hoarding and allowing duty-free import of raw and ready-to-eat sugar. Retail sugar prices are now Rs 37-40 a kg, up sharply from Rs 30 a few months back and Rs 16-17 a kg a year ago. The ministry has sought a report by September 20 from the apex indirect tax body on the stocks released by mills, a CBEC official told ET. The idea is to ensure that mills are releasing adequate amount of sugar in the market and not holding back to benefit for the scarcity driven prices. The excise department collects production data to check tax evasion by units. The government wants to use the data available with the department to monitor the flow of sugar and is stocks. The idea is to ensure that that adequate stock are released on time and reach retail markets. A similar such instruction was issued ahead of general elections by the CBEC. The move comes in the backdrop of certain sections in the government holding the view that mills may be holding onto stocks, thereby causing artificial shortage, the official said. Potato prices to remain firm till November: With prevailing prices of potato ruling at Rs 18-20 kg, the potato seed companies are expecting the acreage to increase by 5-6% from 16 lakh hectares in 2008-09. Experts say this could double potato seed prices during the rabi season. In 2007-08 the potato production in the country was at 305 lakh tonne which fell to 260 lakh tonne in 2008-09. The fall in production was largely due to an increase in temperature during the bulking stage of potato. The crop in north-India including Punjab, Haryana and West-Uttar Pradesh had a bumper crop. However, in other states including Maharashtra, West Bengal there was a loss in the crop which led to a downfall of 15-20% of the overall crop. For one acre of land a potato farmer has to sow 1.43 tonne of potato seed. The companies sold the seed in 50 kg bag, prices of which were at Rs 450- Rs 750. The rates are bound to double this year according to the manufacturers.
