Today we'll be discussing overcoming panic over the long term, by way of eliminating stressors on
the body. In conjunction with psychological counseling, addressing the physical stress can go a
long way toward overcoming panic and anxiety.
There are many causes of panic attacks, of course, but rarely do you read about treating the body
in addition to treating the mental state. Drugs are frequently prescribed in response to frequent
panic episodes, and in many cases this is warranted, but what if we could reduce the effects
and/or frequency of panic with dietary and exercise changes?
A good first step is to change the way you eat. You should eliminate grains and cereals from your
diet, in favor of vegetables, fruits and lean whole cuts of beef, fowl (chicken), and fish. Why
grains? Despite what you've heard about eating whole grains and the food pyramid, grains are
actually difficult for the human body to process. The stress of processing grains can result in a
host of problems, including anxiety, among others.
We've all seen the effects of obesity in this country. This is largely a result of over-consumption of
processed grain-laden foods, and too little consumption of fruits and vegetables. Obesity is the
root of so many health problems -- why wouldn't anxiety be another possible symptom of this
epidemic?
In addition to grains, you would do well to curtail dairy and legumes (beans, for example), at least
temporarily. Dairy and legumes can have the same stressful effects on the body. By eliminating
these you could be clearing the way toward overcoming panic.
A good exercise program should accompany your new eating protocol. If you're largely unfamiliar
with where to start, a good initial step would be to take walks around the block with friends and
family. From there, step up your routine by adding weight bearing exercises, such as pullups and
pushups. Also, joining a commercial gym -- and using it -- is a great way to get and stay in the
exercise mindset.
Exercise has long been shown to have a multitude of beneficial effects on the body, including
mood enhancement.
By establishing a healthy physical platform, it's possible you'll be overcoming panic in the near
term, when combined with proper psychotherapy, if need be.
Of course it's advised that you seek the help of a medical professional if panic attacks continue, or
if panic becomes debilitating enough that it prevents you from enjoying a full life.
