Using Images from the Web

There are many excellent, content-specific images on the Web that you can find using search engines and other

resources. Incorporating images can make your teaching materials more visually appealing, while aiding your

student's understanding of the material. Students’ use of images in reports and papers can also be extremely

useful.

It is important that we teach students respect for copyrights, and that we teach and model proper citation. If you

copy a photo from a website you need to provide the source of the photo, diagram or graph. Online images can

be cited as follows:

Description or title of image. [Online Image] Available http://address/filename, date of

document or download.

Example: Hubble Space Telescope release in the Space Shuttle's Payload Bay. [Online Image]

Available http://explorer.arc.nasa.gov/pub/SPACE/GIF/s31-04-015.gif, October 1, 1996.

To Find an image on the Web using Google:

Go to Google http://www.google.com

Click the Images tab

Type in your keywords

use + to force results +bird +flight

use – to restrict results +bird +flight –plane

use “quotes” for a term like “stupid pet tricks”

Click Search

On the results page, click the image you would like to work with

On the page that loads, click “See full size image”

Advanced image search offers useful options for narrowing your search.

To save an image from the Web to your computer or home directory:

PC: right click on it and choose "Save image as" to save the image to your hard drive.

MAC OS 9: click on the image and hold for several seconds until a menu pops up, select “Download image to

disk.”

MAC OS X: use ctrl-click

Notes: Pay attention to where you save the image.

You can choose to copy an image directly from the Web to an application.

Inserting images into Word or PowerPoint

Insert images into AppleWorks

File  Insert  browse to location of file

Select File by clicking once on it

Click Insert

Change File Format from AppleWorks to All Available in the dropdown menu
