 A settler is a person who lived in a colony

 A colony is a settlement ruled by another country

 They did not have big or fancy homes

 At first, they only had one room to the house where

they cooked, ate, and slept

 They did not have a lot of furniture in the house

 People made their own clothes in colonial times

 People wore bright-colored clothes made from dyes

 Girls would wear red cloaks and hoods

 Girls had their hair covered the entire time

 Boys wore stockings and caps

 They dressed like their fathers at the age of six and

wore wigs

 Babies wore clothes called puddings

 Boys wore the same dresses as girls until they were six

years old

 Some children went to a Dame school where a woman

would teach students in her home

 Only boys went to another school after the Dame

school to learn more while girls stayed home

 Students had to have nice handwriting, but spelling

was not important

 Children sat on hard benches

 It was heated by a fireplace

 The teacher was paid in corn

 There were no bathrooms or running water in a

colonial house

 Children stood in a wooden tub of water once a

month!

 The father would take a bath first, then the mother,

and then the children

 Boys played with drums, balls, hoops, marbles and

kites

 Girls played with dolls and sewed samplers

 The colonists farmed and grew food to survive

 Colonists did not have any machinery like we do today

to make farming easier

 Indentured servants worked under a contract for 4 to 7

years without pay, and would then be set free

 In the beginning, African Americans were indentured

servants who helped colonists complete work on their

farms

 Later, many African Americans were forced into

slavery without any rights

 Slavery is the practice of making one person the

property of another

 Slaves grew tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane

 Slaves also worked various jobs including household

servants and messengers

 Slaves did not live in good conditions

 They were given what they needed to survive: some

food, clothes and shelter

 They were often overworked and punished for not

working fast enough or trying to run away

 Slaves used to sing songs while working in the fields

 These songs could be about the hardships they faced

or clues about running away
