Play and Youth Summer Activities
Report by: Head of Community & Housing
Ward Implications: Sandyford, Jesmond, Heaton, Dene.

1. Synopsis
1.1 This report outlines the proposed summer play and youth activity programme
for young people aged between 5 – 19 years old, residing in the Inner East
Area.
2. Background
2.1 Traditionally the Play and Youth Service has received funding from local ward
sub committees. It has been noted that such monies were set up for ward
issues and that monies given for playschemes were a huge drain on this
resource. The summer programme is an integral part of yearly provision in the
Inner East area and as such, monies need to be sought to sustain this
essential service that we provide in the July and August months.
3. The Provision
Due to the success of last years outdoor educational summer programme for
3.1
the 13 – 19 age range in the Inner East, a similar theme has been explored for
this summer.
The programme for 5 – 13 year olds has been revised for the coming summer,
emphasizing publicity is of paramount importance and a reduction of sites to
create continuity.
Publicity will be in the form of an Inner East leaflet. This will be distributed 2
weeks prior to the end of the school term. Publicity will also be on display in
libraries, local shops etc
.
