					#3 WHAT IS SALVATION?
  BRUSHING UP ON BASICS
        Is someone asks you,
“What can I do to be saved?”
Be honest with them & tell them
        “Absolutely nothing!”
It is too late! - It was done 2000
       years ago on the cross.
WHAT IS SALVATION?
          SALVATION IS DEFINED AS...

Deliverance by God from God and His wrath

When Adam & Eve sinned, they became worthy of
eternal punishment & separation from God.
Gen. 2:17 - But of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you
   shall surely die.
         WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

First, God is Holy & Righteous - Jn.3:36
 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life;
and he who does not believe the Son shall not
see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
“Sin against an eternal God is an eternal offense
 requiring eternal punishment.”
         WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

Second, Man is Inherently Sinful - Rom. 5:12
Just as through one man sin entered the world,
and death through sin, and thus death spread
to all men, because all sinned. (i.e. Original Sin)
“We are not sinners because we sin,
We sin because we are sinners.”
             HOW ARE WE SAVED?

By God, through Jesus.
In Jesus name only - Acts 4:12 (nor is there any other name...)
He is our Substitute - Took our place.
He is our Satisfier - Appeased/Satisifed
  Gods wrath.
               ILLUSTRATIONS:

Ginger Bread Man (our theology before Christ)
Humpty Dumpty (an unsolvable situation)
King’s horses, king’s men..but what about the King?
Our Moral Nature (a dog behaves like a dog
because of his dog nature)
Transplant a cat nature into dog, & it’s behavior
  radically changes. [funny to picture!]
SALVATION IN 3 TENSES
Past: Immediate From sins Penalty!
Present: Continuous From sins Power!
Future: Prospective From sins Presence!
Past: Immediate From sins Penalty!
Rom.10:10 For with the heart one
believes unto righteousness, and with the
mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Present: Continuous From sins Power!
Phil.2:12 Work out your own salvation
 with fear and trembling.
Future: Prospective From sins Presence!
Rom.13:11 And do this, knowing the time,
that now it is high time to awake out of
sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than
 when we first believed.
REDEMPTION
 AGORAZO (ἀγοράζω) BUY IN MARKET

1 Cor. 6:20 For you were
bought at a price;
therefore glorify God in
your body and in your
spirit, which are God’s.
EXAGORAZO (ἐξαγοράζω)
   BUY OUT OF MARKET

     Gal.3:13 Christ has redeemed
us from the curse of the law,
having become a curse for us
for it is written, “Cursed is
everyone who hangs on a tree”.
    LUTROO (λυτρόω) TO SET FREE
       NEVER TO BE BOUGHT AGAIN

Titus 2:14 (Jesus) who gave
Himself for us, that He might
redeem us from every lawless
deed and purify for Himself
His own special people.
REPENTANCE & FAITH
   REPENTANCE - AN ABOUT-FACE

Conviction of the H.S. which results in a
deep desire to change one’s heart & life
by God’s grace.
        FAITH - BELIEF & TRUST

Not a matter of the quality of faith, but
the object of faith.
Wheel barrel Analogy.
Train Analogy.
CAN A CHRISTIAN LOOSE THEIR
        SALVATION?
  CAN A CHRISTIAN LOSE THEIR
         SALVATION?

Better yet...
Can Jesus loose
a Christian?
   CAN JESUS LOOSE A CHRISTIAN?

Jn.10:27-29 My sheep hear My voice, and I know
them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal
life, and they shall never perish; neither shall
anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father,
who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no
one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
  CAN JESUS LOOSE A CHRISTIAN?

Rom.8:38,39 For I am persuaded that neither
death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor
powers, nor things present nor things to come,
nor height nor depth, nor any other created
thing, shall be able to separate us from the
love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  CAN JESUS LOOSE A CHRISTIAN?

Jn.17:12 While I was with them in the
world, I kept them in Your name. Those
whom You gave Me I have kept; and none
of them is lost except the son of perdition,
that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
                ROM. 8:27-29

And we know that all things work together for good to
those who love God, to those who are the called
according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew,
He also predestined to be conformed to the image of
His Son...Moreover whom He predestined, these He
also called; whom He called, these He also justified;
and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
           PROCESS OF SALVATION

Called Justified
Foreknew Sanctified
Predestined Glorified
              CALLED
          or Chosen or Elected

An act of God before creation in which
He chooses some people to be saved.
Acts 13:48 as many as were ordained to
eternal life believed.
                    FOREKNEW

Foreknew – It does not mean simply that God
foreknows what believers will do, but that God
foreknows them. [Acts 2:23; 1 Pet.1:1; Rom.8:29, 11:2]
The term also speaks of love & warmth.
It refers to a meaningful relationship w/a person
based on God’s choice in eternity before creation!
               PREDESTINATION
To mark out w/a boundary beforehand

Eph.1:4,5,11 just as He chose us in Him (when?) before the
foundation of the world, (why?) that we should be holy and
without blame before Him in love, (how will this happen?)
having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus
Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His
will,…In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being
predestined according to the purpose of Him who
works all things according to the counsel of His will,”
            PREDESTINATION

“The predestined certainty of God’s gracious work
in Christ was not meant to perplex men, but to
encourage and reassure all who trust in His
grace!”
God is just and wise in His exercise of free grace,
even when His doings are most perplexing to us.
JUSTIFIED

    To declare to be right
    Means to be legally
    acquitted from
    wrongdoing.
             SANCTIFIED

The process of
maturity as God
conforms us to
His Son’s image.
GLORIFIED

     The final completion
     of God’s purposes in
     salvation.
      THE ORDER OF SALVATION

Election - (God’s choice)
The Gospel Call - (proclaiming the message)
Regeneration - (born again)
Conversion - (faith & repentance)
Justification - (right legal standing)
 THE ORDER OF SALVATION (CON’T)

Adoption - (membership in God’s family)
Sanctification - (right conduct of life)
Perseverance - (remaining a Christian)
Death - (going to be w/the Lord)
Glorification - (receiving a resurrection body)
           PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Predestination is God’s Grace at work before the
foundation of the world.
Calling is God’s Grace confronting us.
Justification is God’s Grace making us right w/Himself.
Glorification is God’s Grace in the consummation of
this age.
       HOW DOES THE N.T.
     PRESENT THIS TEACHING?
As a comfort (family secrets)
As a Reason to Praise God
As an Encouragement to Evangelism.
Spurgeon’s examples:
 Heaven's Pulley & Steel/Ashes
Longfellow could take a worthless piece of paper, write a poem
on it, & instantly make it worth 1000’s of $ & it's called genius.
Bill Gates could sign his name to a piece of paper and make it
worth millions of dollars & it's called riches.
A mechanic can take material worth only five dollars and make
it worth five hundred & it's called skill. {or robbery}
Thomas Kinkade can take a fifty-cent piece of canvas, paint a
picture on it, & make it worth 1000’s of dollars & it's called art
Jesus Christ can take a worthless, sinful life, wash it in His
blood, put His Spirit in it, and make it valuable to God & that's
called The riches of His Grace.
