TI 83 Graphing Calculator - What People Are Saying About It

The TI 83 graphing calculator is one of the most popular graphing calculators available right now.
It's not the latest model, obviously, but many people have found that for the price, it's perfect for
their needs. I've done some research and gathered together the main points people who are using
this calculator have made in their feedback.

Ease of Use:
Everyone who has given feedback on whether the TI 83 is easy to use, has given it five stars for
ease of use, referring to the fact that it is user-friendly and adding comments like: "Although I have
a ti-89 I still prefer the 83+ for its ease of use"; "Anyone who is familiar with the BASIC computer
language can program the TI-83+ with ease" and "The TI-83 made my statistics class easier to
endure".

Compared to the TI 89:
A few users have said they have the TI 89 as well as the TI 83 and have compared them. Most of
them say the TI 89 has a lot more functionality but that unless you need the extra functionality (like
CAS etc), the TI 83 graphing calculator is a better option for the price. The TI 89 is of course more
expensive - but be aware that some teachers won't allow it in their classes, but will allow the 83,
and some claim that because the TI 89 will do work that is normally done on paper, it's
encouraging "laziness". They also point out that for statistics, the TI 83 is better than the TI 89
because it was specifically built for statistics.

General Feedback:
Some have found this calculator excellent, while others found it lacking in some areas. Comments
from: "6+ years and still use it everyday" to "I find the TI-83 a very good calculator and very useful,
but I definitely feel it has its limitations" indicate that it really depends on what you're going to be
using it for. If you're using it for statistics or high school math/ science, it seems this one is all you
need - and the price is lower than other models as well. However, it would probably not be
sufficient beyond freshman year for science or more advanced math. Many universities
recommend it for freshmen because of the fact that its programming structure and interface are
intuitive and very easy to use, but it would probably need to be upgraded after that.

One word of caution: Whichever graphing calculator you're going to use, make sure you buy it
from a reputable dealer and if you want it to be covered by the warranty, make sure you buy it new
(not refurbished) and from a company based in the US.
Although you can get them second hand, I would advise, since you can now get new ones for low
prices, it's worth getting a new one so you're covered by the warranty, and you should have no
problems with it. Here's the best price I've found on a new TI 83 graphing calculator from an online
American-based authorized dealer - with a valid warranty.
