Bobby Fischer, the Mozart of Chess









Robert James Fischer was born on March 9, 1943, in Chicago (USA). He died on January 17, 2008, in

Rejkjavik (Iceland).

Fischer learned to play chess with his sister, at the age of 6 years. We both learned a simple way:

by reading the booklet that came with the game and explains how to move the pieces. From there he paid

no attention to anything that was not related to a board of 64 squares. At age 12 he refused to go to

school, the arguments that he gave his mother were: "I'd rather be the world's best chess one of many

with any race."

Bobby was a child prodigy with an IQ of 184 (more than Einstein), but its beginnings in the chess

world were not too bright, unlike other children great (Morphy, Reshevsky, Capablanca ...). The successes

come as a teenager. With 15 years and 6 months was the title of Grand Master, was the youngest player in

history to do so. Today, with the help of computers, who serve as coaches, and the multitude of

tournaments that are played each month, you can achieve that title at younger ages, for example Sergei

Karjakin to 12 years and 7 months.





Fischer began to reap results unthinkable for a person of his

inexperience, drawing the attention of the entire chess community. In the

U.S. the illusion began to expand like a wildfire, had finally found a player

who can stand against the Soviets in the not too distant future. His early

talent led to him being dubbed the Mozart of chess.

He studied the masters of the nineteenth century, which was

reflected in their play. Always looking for a power that could destroy the

defense combination of his rival. It was actually a universal style player, ie,

dominated all forms of gambling. Their only priority was winning and did not

care how to get there. So he could do it quietly, like Petrosian, or brilliantly as

Anderssen. There lar most spectacular players, but Fischer was so talented

that I could combine the best.





In 1956 he played what is considered his best game: D Byrne-B. Fischer (New York 1956), this item

was referred to as "immortality of the twentieth century." That same year he won his first major triumph

by winning the Championships. United States Junior in Philadelphia (only 13). The year 1957 was the

consecration, several victories in the country opened their doors to international tournaments in Europe.

This could begin to compete in search of his dream: the world championship. Of note was the champion of

his country 14 years, first as important as Reshevsky rivals or Byrne.

Fischer was the only threat the Soviet players were on the horizon. The domain of this prolific

franchise players was devastating for decades and the threat coming from the Atlantic decided to join.

This occurred in multiple tournaments, players of the USSR played against Fischer 100% and then when

faced with forces reserved together (with tables in a few movements). A clear example occurred in the

Candidates Tournament of 1962, Petrosian was first followed by Geller and Keres. Fischer was 4th after

tough battles against rivals of the USSR. While it seems clear that using this strategy is not very sporty, we

must also recognize the large number of Soviet players of great talent, some of them large enough to be

world champions.

During that time, Fischer published the first of his famous lists of the best players ever. There you

can see the influence of players in all romantic young chess players. Years later published a second list.

These were not easy times for Bobby, in most of the tournaments was overtaken by one of the

Soviet representatives. Still got more wins popularity and always managed to finish in the top of all that

went competitions. In tournaments played in the United States knew no rival, only one was felled in the

first place (Santa Monica 1966, 2 °), stunning performances as the United States Championship of 1964

Let us now a feature which, fortunately or unfortunately, always accompanied him: the

controversy. Fischer was famous for his demands to tournament organizers, who literally became crazy

with their demands, which could vary in a matter of hours. His statements never left anyone indifferent,

but sometimes got into quagmires by showing their true political views. We can say that thanks to the

insistence of Fischer, the chess players were able to enjoy better conditions in their profession.







• But in the end everything seemed secondary to Bobby. His only goal

was to become world champion and his big break came in 1971. He

went to the tournament heavily favored candidates and did not

disappoint anyone. For this tournament had sought a formula to end

alliances players of the USSR and it was decided that the ideal was

the knockout. In this format found no rival Bobby and displayed a

spectacular chess. These were the results:

• Quarter-finals: 6 Fischer - Taimanov 0

• Semifinals: Fischer 6 - Larsen 0

• Final: Fischer 6'5 - 2'5 Petrosian





This match for the World Championship was considered the match of the century. With a clear political

background, during the Cold War, both players received full support from their respective countries.

Fischer defeated Spassky had never until then, which did not worry too much. The meeting was so

important that several cities bid for hosting it, the final was played in Reykjavik (following the resignation

of Belgrade by the demands of the U.S.). This event raised a great excitement throughout the world,

thousands of fans came to Reykjavik and hundreds of journalists were accredited to cover the information

for each item. But Fischer's case nothing is safe or stable after the match new requirements had to be

postponed. Finally, the first game took place on July 11, but not with the beginning of the meeting Fischer

calmed since decided not to run the second game by new disagreements with the organizers. Finally, the

match could continue and Fischer managed to steal the win after a hesitant start, which was steeper-

sporting issues that play chess. This victory ended with the Soviet rule, which lasted from 1948 and that

After World Champion, Fischer would not participate in any tournament. His disagreements with FIDE

were total and refused to defend his title in 1975, with Anatoly Karpov, who became the new champion of

the world without having moved a single tab. Negotiated with Fischer Karpov several times so that the

match could be held, but in the end always talks broke down on the side of North America. It's a real pity

not being able to enjoy the game of Fischer for a few years and seeing how they deal with Karpov and

Kasparov, which had given us a clearer idea of their true potential.

And unfortunately for chess, Fischer disappeared and no one knew anything about him, so they

refused to participate in competitive chess. Since that time only went to show signs of life for a scandal

unclear. In the spring of 1978 Fischer sat down to a board to deal with the computer MacHack VI, in a

secret match 3 games. The agreement stipulated that the items are not made public, but someone leaked

and published in magazines around the world. Fischer literally swept the 3 game machine, which showed

that he was still far from being able to defeat the man.

In 1992 he decided to leave his retirement again to play a match against Boris Spassky (unofficial).

The match was held in Sveti Stefan (Yugoslavia) and was won by Fischer-12.5 17.5 (see table). This result

showed the world that, despite the 20 years he had retired, was still a player capable of playing at the

highest level. And after the match, once again, Bobby decided to retire from chess and escape from the

world.



The best we can do is be remembered for his boundless talent and for his

unwavering faith in the pursuit of victory. His style was aggressive, attack,

attack sought to abandonment rival. Always said that those who did not play

in the opening 1.e4 were cowards. This led to an opening repertoire was very

wide, which compensated for an understanding of the game just within reach.

He believes that opening theory kill creativity led him to create a new

way to play chess: Random system. This method consisted of a different

Fischer has always been a distinctive character with endearing traits and other truly unbearable. On

This way of being led to many stories, one of which was associated with no taste for alcoholic

beverages: during a tournament in Zagreb the organization presented each player with two bottles of

liquor typical of the region. Back then Bent Larsen was the mate of the Fischer team. Bent went to Bobby's

room to see how it was and found him trying to open the bottles. Larsen, surprised, said, "Will you drink it

now?". Bobby replied "No, I just want to throw down the sink." Larsen tried to convince him not to, that at

least gave them to a friend. Bobby was blunt: "I will not be responsible for the poisoning of a human

being." A person always faithful to his principles, to the ultimate consequence.

As for his life in recent years, occasionally appeared on stage giving an interview to a radio or

writing an article in a newspaper. Most of the time it was to give some political opinion, usually to criticize

any action of his country which did not agree (for example, the embargo on Cuba and the recent war in

Iraq). Remember that Fischer was banned in the United States as it had pending a sentence of 10 years in

prison (for spitting on an order saying that would violate United Nations sanctions if he played chess in

Yugoslavia, which he did during his match with Spassky in 1992).

Always has been rumored to play chess online, but anonymously. They say he was easily

recognizable by its typical King movement in the early plays, which refuses to castle and moved his king to

play chess in prison. In the end the affair had a happy ending and Iceland

welcomed Fischer, he could avoid jail once again.

During his stay in Iceland continued to generate news from time to time, there was even talk of

his return to the boards to play a match against Kasparov and Karpov. On January 18, 2008, news

spread like wildfire across all media, Bobby Fischer had died of unknown causes. The turmoil in

the world of chess was terrible, dozens of tributes paid him in all media, from 'Chess Attack "also I

Fischer has been promoted to a higher rank, to become a legend. There are few who say it

is the best player in chess history, but this is really hard to measure. What is clear is that a talent

Fischer statistics are: 447 wins, 251 tables and 89 defeats, with an average of 72'3% (the

average score out of victories and tables, and divide by the total items). Despite how short was

his career, came to have a maximum of 2,785 pts ELO, something only beaten by only just a few

chess players in the world like: Kasparov ... and now by Anand, Topalov, Aronian, Carlsen and

Kramnik. Although today it is easier to reach these figures, since many tournaments are played

each year.
