RACHEL SHELBOURNE for FRESHMAN CLASS SECRETARY/TREASURER
Hello Furman!! Especially, hello Class of 2013!! I know it has been a hectic few weeks of school thus far so thank you so much for taking the time to come and support all of us tonight! My name is Rachel Shelbourne. I am a freshman, and I am seeking your vote as Secretary/Treasurer for the freshman class. I was walking around with my petition for election a few days ago and I was surprised by how many QUESTIONS I was asked when I asked people to sign it!! I was so impressed by how much Furman students genuinely want to know what AFS and the secretary of the class will do for them. The number one question I was asked as I made the rounds was, “So how are you going to get us free vending machines?? Because if you can’t, I don’t know if I’m voting for you....” and my answer was and still is, “Believe me, brother hall, I would if I could!!” The second question I keep getting asked is this: “What, in all actually, is the role of the class secretary/treasurer in AFS? More specifically, what will I do as secretary/treasurer for the Class of 2013?” My answer to that question is this: The position of class secretary, or treasurer, for that matter, is to complete the cycle of communication between the student body, the student government and the rest of the Furman network- teachers, faculty and board members. The secretary not only relays concerns from the students to the government, but they also relay the outcomes of the government meetings to the student body. In this way, Furman provides its student body with a way to change the current system and a means by which to fix natural discrepancies. I WILL take up your cause- whether it be free vending machines (kind of a stretch!), or ketchup bottles in the DH (some of y’all know what I’m talking about), or campus parking, or drying racks- the list goes on and on- I will take up your cause and I will fight for you. What’s more, when a conclusion is made, I will personally take responsibility for informing you of that outcome. Trust me on this one!! In conclusion, I must tell you this: If you elect me, Rachel Shelbourne, as secretary for the class of 2013, I WILL make a stand for you, I will fight for you, and I will keep you informed and engaged in the process of improving our campus. Class of 2013, we ARE the future of Furman
University and, together, we can insure that our contribution to the Furman community is an outstanding one. I would appreciate your vote so much. So write it down, Shelbourne for Secretary!! And don’t forget to check your emails and vote on September 14th!!
