Hi everyone, my name is Katie Iannace. Let me start off by saying if you saw me last night walking around hanging posters with a guy in a gorilla suit, it was all meant in good humor. I hope no one was weirded out. Obviously though, I like to have fun, but don’t let that mislead you. I take my responsibilities very seriously. I’m not up here trying to win a popularity contest nor am I only after the title of Freshmen President. I’ve been on the other end of that situation before- where someone in a leadership position isn’t that much of a leader. It’s frustrating and nothing gets done. That’s where I come in. I genuinely care about my classmates. I listen to your thoughts and opinions and then act accordingly, not based off my own agenda. When you think about your representative, I want you to think “wow, she’s so active, she does so much for me,” not “we have a class president?” Here at Furman, students are given many opportunities. But at the same time, there are so many opportunities still out there, waiting to be presented to us. We need someone who is willing to go the extra mile to get those, to push for change when necessary, and work diligently at the job. I am that someone. Two days into O-Week, I literally lost my voice from shouting, but getting 110% involved is just in my nature. I know a good number of freshmen disregard Student Government or don’t see it as being too important. Well, I plan to change that. By the end of the year, I want every single person in our class to feel like student government has helped them in one way or another, be it through events, aid, or just bringing about a fun time. I’m always out on campus and always willing to talk with whoever has anything to say and I feel like that gives me a good sense of what everyone wants. So whether it’s an issue you want to discuss or just to say hi, I’m here. If elected president, I’ll still be here, probably more so with everything I’ll be trying to do for the freshmen class, still caring, working hard, and having a few laughs while doing it. Thank you for listening, I hope I get the chance to return the favor.
