Playing a supporting
role for the
Singapore industries
On 14 December 2004, Mr Lim Teck Lee, Director of Operations
and Technology Transfer of Design Technology Institute Ltd
(DTI), gave a presentation on what his firm did and how it
could help SMa’s Automation Technology Industry Group
(ATIG) members.
Jointly set up by the National University of Singapore (NUS)
and the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), DTI
supports the industry by training students in product design,
conducting industry-driven research and providing education
in design technology. Through its three-pronged strategy of
education, applied research and direct industrial support,
DTI plays an important role in enhancing the global
competitiveness of industries in Singapore.
Of particular relevance to SMa members, Mr Lim said their
post-graduate engineering students could be attached to
companies. Demand for these students were high among the
MNCs. Companies hiring these students were heavily subsidised
by the government. Stringent entrance requirements ensured
that only the best students from countries like India, China,
Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar etc were employed.
Most participants expressed interest in hiring these students
for their company projects.
