              Where are we?

• In comparison to Capital Region schools
• In comparison to other “similar” schools
• In terms of current AYP accountability
• In a grade to grade comparison (2006-07)
• In relation to other years (05-06 & 07-08)
• Using a growth model comparison
    Accountability is changing
• Chapter 57 of the NYS Laws of 2007
legislated a growth model by 2008-2009

• And a value added model by 2010-2011
 Accountability: Status vs. Growth

• Status Models: take a snapshot of a
subgroup’s or school’s level of proficiency
at one point in time and compare with an
  established target (AMO)
In this model, school accountability is
measured by the proportion of students
who reach level 3 & 4 each year.

In this model, students progress toward proficiency
differentially,

and accountability is measured by how much
students move toward that target each year.
         Purpose for New
       Accountability Design
• How do we design models that move
students from low to proficient as well as
  proficient to distinction?
• How can we insure that improved scores
  represent improved learning?
• How do we use data to improve teaching
  & learning?
Where do we need to be?
We need to meet annual
achievement objectives

        AYP
We need to show progress with
         all students

We need to become a great school.
How do we get there?
           In great schools…..
• Beliefs/Goals are made explicit.
• Student learning is the focus.
• Decisions are data-driven.
• Adults model learning.
• Culture celebrates success.
• Leadership is distributed.

             Big Questions
• What do we want students to learn?
• How will we know if they learned it?
• How will we respond when they don’t?
• How will we meet the needs of those who
    “already know”?
