Notes from the Dean

Graduate Forum: April 23rd Connecticut Room 12:30-2:30

Comprehensive exam results were due on Dec. 1st – there are still departments that have
not reported results of examinations yet. Dean Lemma wants to make sure the correct
students are on the graduation list. Please forward data to the Dean’s Office as soon as
possible.
Please be sure to return all pending files to the graduate admissions office before you
leave for the break. If you have files that are pending materials please let us know to hold
them or withdraw them.
Thesis and special project should be turned into the Graduate office by December 19. If
you need additional days, let the Dean know who will review on the 30th. All grade
change forms must be given to the graduate office when all grades are due so that
graduate students may be closed out for graduation.
Please remember to have all independent study and capstone registration forms submitted
to the Graduate Office as soon as possible; they should not be sent after the first week of
classes (February 2) and will not be counted after the freeze date. We continue to lose
students in our overall counts when this occurs.
Since graduate students wait until the last minute to register for classes, if they do not
have a planned program on file, they will need a pin number. Please make arrangements
to have someone in your office provide the pin numbers if you are not going to be in the
office during the continuing registration period.
Elections:
As a result of G. Fitzgerald’s (chair) upcoming sabbatical, an election was held to fill the
position for the spring 2009 semester, with another election to fill the position for a full
three year term to be held at the end of the spring 2009 semester. At the October 23rd
meeting K. Weiss was nominated. Hearing no other nominations, the slate was put to a
vote. K. Weiss was unanimously elected chair. A call for nominations was requested to
fill the position of secretary. J. Harmon self-nominated and hearing no other
nominations, the slate was put to a vote. J. Harmon was unanimously elected secretary.
Committee Reports
Ad hoc Committee on Program Offerings
Scholarship
J. Sikoski (chair) circulated the list of winners pending final approval. Dean
Lemma requested that everyone review the list to make sure all names are on the
list. There will be no outstanding scholar award this year for the School of
Technology. A reception honoring the award winners will be held on February
26th from 5 – 7 pm in the Constitution room. Dean Lemma circulated a list and
asked the members to indicate names of those who will introduce the recipients
from individual programs.
Policy
S. Seider – see wording below. These policy statements will make the wording
official in the next graduate catalog – see below.
The next meeting of the Policy committee is Thursday 12/11.
Appeals
G. Claffey – None. This was amended to reflect that there was one appeal that is
in the course of being resolved. The issue was forwarded to Dean Lemma’s
office from the GSC appeals committee and the Dean reported that the issue is
now in the hands of the student involved in the appeal request.
GSA
Dean Lemma reported on behalf of our student member. The senate contacted
Alex to remind her that graduate students are required to serve on a number of
committees in addition to the GSC (Academic Integrity Committee, UPBC - the
University Policy and Budget Committee and there should also be other graduate
students who should serve on our committee from the other schools of the
University. Dean Lemma asked that members please nominate some graduate
students to be contacted who might serve on these committees. For additional
information please contact Alexandra Rossett or Dean Lemma’s office.
Curriculum
D. Mitchell reported that the next round of curriculum changes needs to be
submitted before we return for the spring semester. A list of courses that appear
to be inactive was sent to all departments for input. Please be sure to inform the
curriculum committee of the status of these courses.
The information provided below was voted upon and fully APPROVED
1) IT: The committee voted to approve the proposal from the Department of
Manufacturing & Construction Management to change designator of graduate-level
courses for the M.S. in Technology Management from IT (Industrial Technology) to TM

The following Policy was APPROVED with highlighted changes
COURSE CREDIT OVERLOADS FOR FULL-TIME GRADUATE
STUDENTS
A typical study program for a full-time graduate student at CCSU is
considered to be 9-15 credits of academic work per semester. A full-time
graduate student who wishes to register for 16-18 credits must receive
written authorization from the Dean, School of Graduate Studies.
Authorization for credit overloads during winter and summer session must
also be obtained from the Dean. Credit overload forms are provided by the
University Registrar.
Students who wish to register for more than 18 credits should consult with
their advisor and then apply in writing to the Dean, School of Graduate
Studies at least one week prior to registration for the semester in which the
additional course credits are to be taken. Applications for over 18 credits are
available on the Registrar’s website. Effective fall, 2003, in addition to the
applicable tuition/required fees, full-time students registering for more than
18 credits will be assessed appropriate excess per credit fees for each credit
beyond 18. These fees are non-refundable and will not be deleted if at a
later time the total credits are fewer than 19.
