When your web pages are ready to go on the World Wide Web, you are
ready to “publish” them, to make them accessible to the public.
Are you sure you are ready?

Oh baby, baby it’s a Wild Wild World…
Standard copyright laws do apply on the Web and it is wise to avoid
publishing the work (text, image, audio, video) of others without their formal
permission.
Ready?
1 – you’re safe with original materials.
2 – if you’re borrowing someone else’s material, license the right to use it.
3 – public domain materials are lucrative, but still it’s wise to investigate the
copyright status every bit of item you wish to use.
4 – make use of fair use when you’re appropriating other’s web pages for
your web pages.
5 – can you link to just any web sites? Is there a doctrine of implied
public access on the WWW?
6 – if you’re publishing composite web pages, are you taking the pages out
of their original context?

Wait…are you protected?
Two primary methods to protect your site:
• technical countermeasures
e.g. digital watermarking, spiders
• legal protection
e.g. implementing a copyright strategy:
1) Ownership – 2) Notice – 3) Registration
Have a clear understanding of what it is that you consider as being protected by copyright. Text,
graphics, script, data, or code?
?
And…one small thing…
Be absolutely sure that you’ve added links to plug-in download sites when
you’re using a mix of formats:
Multimedia
1Graphics, e.g. jpg/jpeg, gif
2Audio, e.g. wav, au, mp3.
3Video, (.mpg or .mov)
4Animation, i.e. Flash, Shockwave
Java applets (.class, .js) or other Web program files.
Files in proprietary formats, such as Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) and Word
(.doc)
•Downloadable files (.exe, zip)
Oops, wait…
Could you just do an offline test
once again, please?
And while you’re at it,
test it also on the other browsers.
Are you happy?
A-ah, not just yet…
Okay, you’re happy.
Do you think others would feel the same about your web
site?
Test it online.
Get feedbacks from sample audience.
Assess and analise them. Adjust.
Is everybody happy now?
Guess we’re set now…
You’re set when you have the set:
