Songs of Freedom by Bob Marley &
The Wailers
Songs Of Freedom *A Must Have*
When Songs of Freedom was released originally in 1992, it was a perfect
complement to either a greatest hits collection like Legend or the entire
collection of the reggae masters albums. Songs boasts enough of the
recognizable from Marleys canon to address the hit seeker, but the set
also reaches way, way back to include Marleys first single, the youthful
Judge Not from 1962, and then closes more than four hours later with a
1980 live take of Redemption Song from his last concert. In between are
live takes, studio remixes, and, of course, standard looks at Marley
standards, playing together as a perfect balance between the familiar and
the new. The flow of famous takes increases into CDs 3 and 4, where No
Woman, No Cry appears from a 1976 set at the Roxy and where Jammin
and Exodus come in mixes that were new to fans in 1992. Of course these
four CDs show in wide-angle view exactly how fantastic and commercially
improbable Marley was. He was able to popularize tunes about both the
repression of African nations and their liberation while also bringing to rock
audiences an undeniably Jamaican music, breaking the U.S. and British
geographic strongholds on the 1970s pop and rock marketplace. Never
mind that he made Island Records first fortune, he also created a body of
work so lasting that a four-CD set heavy on alternate versions can stand
out in any contemporary music collection. For the 1999 reissue of the
original 1992 box set, no new music has been added. The format has
changed, though, from a long-box presentation to a cube containing
individual slipcased CDs. Its still a remarkable gem. --Andrew Bartlett
Personal Review: Songs of Freedom by Bob Marley & The
Wailers
Songs of Freedom
Songs of Freedom is simply the best box set I have ever listened to. Bob
Marley & the Wailers were geniuses that created music that will be
timeless for hundreds of years to come. I am about to purchase this
product today. It will be the 4th set I have purchased!! Over time people
have borrowed some of the Cds and never returned them. I have also had
former friends (LOL) who have stolen them without asking because they
loved the box set so much!! I have been forced to keep buying this set. I
will just have to put it on my IPOD and then keep the box set in a safe
deposit box at my bank!! (LOL) There are songs on here that I had never
heard before because they werent the big hits that most people have
heard. But they are the best songs in this set. This collection really
expanded my love for Bobs music. It also contains a lot of the hits that are
well known but are usually in different formats or are the live versions. I
am usually not a big fan of those but for this set they are simply amazing.
This box set is my favorite collection of any music. I prove that by having
to buy the box set every year. But I am happy to do it for Bobs surviving
family. I just wish more artists would use this as an example of how to
create a box set of someones career in music. I would spend a hundred
dollars a set if I had to. Its worth EVERY PENNY!!
