 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION
10
11 RECOGNIZING ONE HUNDRED FIFTY YEARS OF
12 OUTSTANDING, DEDICATED SERVICE OF THE SISTERS
13 OF CHARITY OF ST. AUGUSTINE WHO STARTED
14 PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL IN RICHLAND COUNTY IN 1938
15 AND EXPRESSING THE GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION
16 OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE
17 TO THE SISTERS FOR THEIR DECADES OF SERVICE AND
18 EXTRAORDINARY HEALTHCARE IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
19
20 Whereas, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine came to America
21 from France in 1851 and began their healthcare ministry in
22 Cleveland, Ohio as Cleveland’s first public health nurses; and
23
24 Whereas, in 1938, at the invitation of Bishop Emmett M. Walsh of
25 Charleston, the Sisters’ ministry and mission expanded to
26 Columbia, South Carolina, where they were given a small piece of
27   property and ten thousand dollars by the church to start a hospital;
28 and
29
30 Whereas, the Sisters mortgaged their motherhouse raising one
31 hundred thousand dollars and with their gift from the church began
32 Providence Hospital; and
33
34 Whereas, since Providence Hospital’s inception, one thing has
35 remained constant - the dedication and commitment of the Sisters
36 of Charity to providing the highest quality of care to the residents
37 of Richland and Lexington Counties and to South Carolinians
38 throughout the State; and
39
40 Whereas, as a result of their community life of prayer and service,
41 the Sisters, in conjunction with their distinguished hospital
42 leadership, have expanded the hospital to include Providence

     [786] 1
1 Hospital Northeast and the Providence Heart Institute, a heart
2 treatment center renowned in the Southeast; and
 3
4 Whereas, throughout their service in the Columbia area, the Sisters
5 of Charity have established many other ministries including the
6 Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, a strong funding
7 source for healthcare programs serving those in need, and the
8 Healthy Learners program which provides healthcare services to
 9 disadvantaged school children; and
10
11 Whereas, the Sisters of Charity continue to be courageous in their
12 ministries and exceptional in their capacity to provide loving care
13 to many communities where they have also established hospitals,
14 orphanages, a home for unwed mothers, and the first inpatient
15 hospital unit for alcoholics; and
16
17 Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to have the
18 opportunity to recognize the extraordinary dedication and
19 outstanding healthcare service provided through the love and
20 devotion of the Sisters of Charity. Now, therefore,
21
22 Be it resolved by the Senate:
23
24 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution,
25 recognize one hundred and fifty years of outstanding, dedicated
26 service of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine who started

28 gratitude and appreciation for their decades of service and
29 extraordinary healthcare in South Carolina.
30
31 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
32 the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.
33 ----XX----
