Subject: Minutes for Seminars & Workshop Committee Meeting August 16, 2005

The Seminars & Workshops Committee met on August 16, 2005. The meeting was
conducted at the CDM office in Raleigh and the Black and Veatch office in Charlotte,
NC. The following people were in attendance:
Lori Crossland, Ken Vogt, Pam Moss, Freddie Martin, Katya Bilyk, Amy Simes, Maggie
Macomber, Bill Dowbiggin, Lee Sherman, and Vance Brooks were in attendance
Welcome/Introductions
Ken Vogt began meeting with introductions and welcome to all.
The group accepted minutes from the last meeting, May 17, 2005.
The committee agreed the Workplan Refocus was on schedule and Ken asked the
members to review for next year and forward all comments to him. He was also going to
check into getting copies of the 2003 Strategic Plan for us to refer to during our review.
Old Business
1. Seminar and Workshop committee membership update – No new members this
month.
2. Website update – All information is up to date.
3. Recruitment/Retainment – Maggie and Lori will have the Seminar & Workshop
table at the annual conference and are looking for additional volunteers from the
committee. There will be brochures, seminar list, and signs. We will also have
the “Idea” jar again this year, for suggestions from the members of NC AWWA.
4. Presenter Database – Alana Loughlin is keeping the database of past presenters up
to date.
New Business
1. Feedback/Direction from Board – Nothing new reported by Pam.
2. Low enrollment at math workshops was discussed by the group and corrective
action will need to be taken.

3. There may be a need to raise fees in order to achieve revenue goals for 2005.
4. July 13, 2005 Achievement Report – No changes and Ken stressed the importance
of the members volunteering for seminars.
5. The Donald E. Francisco Educator of the Year Award. Ken Vogt will discuss
candidates with other members of this committee.
Workshop Planning
1. Again, Pam stressed the importance of each speaker at the seminar not to wait
till the last minute and expect NCAWWA to produce handouts for seminar.
Very stressful for the staff.
2. Operators Conference
a. Three coordinators determined
b. Will take place twice a year.
c. It will be a two-day event
3. Train The Trainer will take place in Fayetteville on Sep 22. Committee
members should take advantage of this training session.
4. We will hold our committee meeting during the annual conference on Wed, at
7:30 a.m. Room has yet to be determined.
5. 2006 Planning
a. Ken Vogt expressed interest in being Chairman of the Committee and
Vance Brooks expressed an interest in serving as Co-Chairman for 2006.
Others interested in serving in these capacities in 2006 were encouraged
to make these intentions known to the Board of Trustees as the Chair of
the Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for making these
appointments.
b. We will have 44 seminars next year – The Seminars & Workshop
Committee will be responsible for 14 of those slots. Various committees
will take responsibility for the other seminars.
c. NC Water Treatment Facility Operators Certification Board is looking at
pre approval of seminar for drinking water operators in January ’06. We
should know more at our next meeting
d. Next meeting has been tentatively established during the Annual
Conference on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30
a.m.

Next Training Events Deadline - All information for seminars must be to Pam no later
than Aug 31 in order to make the Training Events brochure.
Next Meeting – Oct 3, 2005 1:30 pm – Charlotte committee members will initiate
the call to NCAWWA/Raleigh for the telecom.
