Professional Development Requirement
Policy
This attorney drafted professional development requirement
policy sets forth the updated requirements of a company with
respect to the expected and required professional development of
its employees. The document provides standard language which
may be revised to reflect a company’s core values, and set forth
the particular company requirements of its various employees.

Professional Development Requirement Policy

This shall serve as written notice to all employees of _____ [Instruction: Insert company
name.] that as of ____, [Instruction: Insert effective date of policy requirement.] _____
[Instruction: Insert company name.] the following professional development requirement
policy will be in effect.
[Optional language: Company may want to state in a sentence or two the company’s
mission statement and/or policy goal or purpose, in a motivational manner.]
This policy will apply to _____ [Instruction: Insert all applicable personnel, or categories
thereof.]
[Comment: The following language is to be used as a guide by the company in developing
its policy, and need not be used verbatim.] The Company will identify organizational goals
and priorities, and develop and implement a range of strategies and programs to enhance and
build the capacity, skills and professionalism of employees to enable them to contribute
effectively to the Company’s mission and strategic directions. The Company is committed to
providing employees with:
A. The opportunity to develop capabilities that compliment organizational and work unit
goals.
B. The opportunity to develop a career plan and participate in career development activities
that extend and enhance their capabilities and capacity for advancement within the
Company.
C. Equity of access to development opportunities.
D. The Company will strive to plan and prioritize employee development needs in alignment
with organizational goals, and make all reasonable efforts to ensure equity of access to
relevant professional development activities and opportunities for all applicable
employees. Employees are encouraged to take an active role in their own ongoing
professional and career development and to apply their learning to its most effective use.
The Company recognizes the importance of the following principles underpinning the provision
of a successful program of professional development: acknowledgment of professional
development as a framework to support and encourage continuous learning opportunities; equity
of access to such programs and a recognition that the responsibility for success of such programs
is shared between employees, supervisors and managers, among other core principles.
It is recommended that each employee develops, in consultation with their supervisor, an
individual development plan, in addition to any state required or recommended development, and
that the employee, with the support of their supervisor and Head of Unit, actively implement this
plan and summarize progress and outcomes of the plan at least annually, whether formally or
informally. Supervisors have a responsibility to ensure the effective planning, support,

monitoring and implementation of such individual plans, and approve and support agreed plans
in line with organizational unit plans and budgets.
In accordance with this policy statement, all new employees will receive the following training
upon hire: _____ [Instruction: Insert applicable training to be provided. If further training

required of the applicable employees, or other requirements.]
