Instructions for Marriage and Divorce Template:
Please review the general transcription rules at
,
especially sections I.1, I.2, II and IV.
Instructions for marriages / divorces generally follow those for births.
* Microfilm # -
The microfilm number from LDS Family History Library,
a seven-digit number.
If the records have not been microfilmed, write "Not microfilmed" in this cell.
* Microfilm Item # -
The microfilm item number on the microfilm.
There are typically about a dozen items on each microfilm reel.
If these records have not been microfilmed, leave this cell blank.
* Frame # -
The "Frame Number" is an image number on a CD.
This number is written in the upper left of each image on the CD,
using black-on-white numbers, appended to the microfilm number, with leading zeros.
Transcribe this number without the leading zeros.
The "Frame Number" is not displayed in the final database;
it is for internal use only, and can be useful during the translation process.
If these records have not been microfilmed, leave this cell blank.
* Image # -
This is the number above the record on the LDS microfilm.
Some newer microfilmed records have this number; older records do not.
This number is written centered above the microfilmed page,
using a white-on-black digital font.
If there is no digital image number, you can use the Page Number written
in the original record.
This number can be helpful to the researcher, so that they can
go directly to the correct page or image on the microfilm.
If these numbers are missing, leave this cell blank.
* Place Recorded -
The town where the marriage/divorce record was written.
This will be the same town for every record in a particular book.
This town name is almost always on the title page(s) of the record book.
* Year Recorded -
The year that the marriage was registered.
This can be different from the year in the "Date of Marriage".
For example, a marriage occurring in late December
might be recorded in January of the following year, etc.
This year should be taken either from a title page of the
registration book, or as mentioned on the separate pages at
the beginning of each year's section.
* Marriage or Divorce
If the record is a marriage, enter the word "Marriage".
If the record is a divorce, enter the word "Divorce".
* Record # -
The record number of the marriage or divorce in the original books.
In the original books, there a column on each page for the marriage or divorce.
They are numbered sequentially each year.
Marriages and divorces are in separate books.
This data will enable users looking for the original record
on the microfilm to locate the correct record.
* Date of Marriage or Divorce -
In the Czarist format vital records, dates are recorded in
both the Julian calendar (used by the Russian) and the
Hebrew calendar (used by the Jews).
Transcribe both dates, from either side of the record.
For the Julian date, transcribe the Day / Month / Year
each in separate fields.
For the Hebrew date, record the month and day in one field.
The names of the Hebrew months can be transliterated
directly (the spelling can vary).
* Husband -
The following seven fields all pertain to the husband/groom in the record.
* Husband's Place -
The town where the husband resided or was registered.
Transliterate place names as accurately as possible --

NOT a modern native name. The modern native name can
be written after it, in square brackets --
See standard transcription rule I.2.b.:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#I.2
* Surname -
The surname (last name, family name) of the husband.
All surnames should be written in all CAPITAL LETTERS.
(Other proper names in other columns, such as given names and town names,

If the husband has no surname (i.e. patronymics only), then indicate this with
a dash ("-") character, rather than leaving the field blank or using any other indicator.
The name on the Russian side of the record might be
different from the name on the Hebrew side. If that is
the case, then write both names -- separated by spaces
and a slash, e.g. "KAGANSKI / KOHEN".
Transliteration guides for Russian (Cyrillic letters) into English (Latin letters)
can be found at: , especially
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Russian#Conventional_transcription_of_Russian_names

See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
.
* Father -
The husband's father's first name(s).
If the name on the Hebrew side of the record is different
from the name on the Russian side, they should both be written,
separated by a slash, as specified above under "Given Name".
If the father's patronymic (the husband's paternal grandfather's given name)

in the format "Y Xovich" (Russian), or "Y ben X" (Hebrew).
See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
.
* Mother -
The husband's mother's first name(s).
Same instructions as for the "Father's Given Name" field immediately above.

in the format "Y Xovna" (Russian), or "Y bat X" (Hebrew).
* Mother's Maiden Name -
The husband's mother's maiden surname, written in all CAPITAL LETTERS.

a dash ("-") character, rather than leaving the field blank or using any other indicator.
The name on the Russian side of the record might be
different from the name on the Hebrew side. If that is
the case, then write both names -- separated by spaces
and a slash, e.g. "KAGANSKI / KOHEN".

* Age or year born -
Age of the husband, or the year that he was born.
List exactly as is written in the original record.
* Town of Marriage or Divorce -
The place where the marriage or divorce occurred, as indicated in
each individual record.
This is often the same place as the "Place Recorded"
(the town where the record book was written), but sometimes
a record book contains the records for more than one town.
Transliterate place names as accurately as possible --
Write the town name as it is written in the original record,
NOT a modern native name. The modern native name can
be written after the transliterated name, in square brackets --
See standard transcription rule I.2.b.:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#I.2

"Comments" column, if there are towns mentioned in that column
which are different from any of the towns in the "Place Recorded",
"Husband's Place", "Wife's Place" and "Marriage or Divorce Place" columns.
The places mentioned in the "Comments" column might be concerning
the groom's title (meschanin or merchant), or a parent's profession
or place of registration/residence.
For more information on the "Other Towns" column, see:
.
* Other Surnames -
The "Other Surnames" column is a special hidden (non-displayed)

"Comments" and "Father" columns, if there are any surnames mentioned
in those columns which are different from the surnames in the other
Surname columns ("Husband's Surname", "Wife's Surname" and both
"Mother's Maiden Surname").
The surnames mentioned in the "Comments" or "Father" columns might be
the wife's father's surname (i.e. in the case of a widowed/divorced bride),
or the surname of a previous spouse.
For more information on the "Other Surnames" column, see:

notes concerning the status, etc. of the husband, wife or their parents.

on the left side during the time that Bessarabia was under Romanian rule.
* Archive/Fond -
