PERSPECTIVE

WHAT IS IT????

American Studies I

TEST TIME!!!!

TEST

WHAT IS IT???

DEFINITION OF PERSPECTIVE:

 Opinion based on fact

 KEY: NOT AN OPINION!!!

EVERYONE HAS OPINIONS!

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT

PERSPECTIVES BECAUSE THEY

INTERPRET/SEE FACTS DIFFERENTLY

 DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE WRONG!!!

 For example, people have various

perspectives on controversial issues like gay

marriage

OPINION VS. PERSPECTIVE

# 1 “Gay marriage should be allowed in all 50

states because it is only fair and people that are

gay should be allowed to marry like everyone

else.”

#2 “Gay marriage is illegal because throughout

the history of civilization the legal and accepted

definition of marriage is the nuptial between a

man and a woman; therefore, marriage between

same sex couples defies the definition of

marriage.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

REVIEW

PERSPECTIVE: AN OPINION BASED ON

FACT

CAN BE DIFFERENT THAN ANOTHER’S

NOT JUST AN OPINION!

THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR, YOU WILL

BE CHALLENGED TO “THINK LIKE AN

HISTORIAN” IN ORDER TO CREATE

YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE

“THINKING LIKE A HISTORIAN”

WHY SHOULD I?

Because it will allow you to…

 Learn how to analyze all types of information

 See relationships between causes and effects

 Make sense of the past and connect it to the

present and the possible future

 Learn how to communicate better and make

more coherent arguments

 Gain a deeper understanding of everything!

THINKING LIKE A HISTORIAN

PROCESS

CONTEXTUALIZE: Imagining the

setting; thinking of the past in terms of

how it was

CORROBORATE: Assessing the

reliability of sources

INTERPRETING: Creating an

explanation based on history;

conclusion you make

THINKING LIKE A HISTORIAN

PROCESS

IDENTIFYING & USING EVIDENCE:

Finding clues, determining reliability,

finding proof

INVESTIGATING: Finding out the setting,

“the story”; examining primary sources

DETERMINING SIGNIFICANCE:

Answering “so what?”, “why does it

matter?”; connecting the source, topic, &

event together; how does it influence

people? Time?
