•Mixtures VS Compounds
What is the matter ?
• Mixtures M
• Solutions S
• Elements E
• Compounds C
• Matter made up of… two or
more substances MIXED
together but not chemically
Here is a typical experiment used to
demonstrate these concepts.
Mixing iron powder and sulphur powder
results in a mixture. When the mixture is
heated strongly, it becomes the compound
• Homogeneous- Mixed well!! Separate
particles not easily recognizable.
Toothpaste? Hand lotion?
• Heterogeneous – all solid materials
that do not appear to be well mixed.
PIZZA? CONCRETE?? Can you think
a type of homogeneous mixture formed when
one substance (solid) dissolves into another
Sugar into water !!
• Made up of….Only one kind of
material and has DEFINATE
• Elements are the simplest pure
• 2 or more elements chemically
Element Compound Mixture
Only one kind Made up of Made up of
of atom MORE than one more than one
kind of atom kind of molecule
Cannot be Can only be Can be
broken down broken down by separated by

Same Has different Same properties
