					   •Classifying Matter
     •Pure elements
•Mixtures VS Compounds
What is the matter ?
• Mixtures M

• Solutions S

• Elements E

• Compounds C
Mixtures
• Matter made up of… two or
  more substances MIXED
  together but not chemically
  combined
Here is a typical experiment used to
 demonstrate these concepts.
Mixing iron powder and sulphur powder
results in a mixture. When the mixture is
heated strongly, it becomes the compound
 iron sulphide.
Homogeneous and
Heterogeneous
• Homogeneous- Mixed well!! Separate
  particles not easily recognizable.
  Toothpaste? Hand lotion?
• Heterogeneous – all solid materials
that do not appear to be well mixed.
  PIZZA? CONCRETE?? Can you think
  of some?
Solutions
a type of homogeneous mixture formed when
one substance (solid) dissolves into another
(liquid).

                           Sugar into water !!
Elements
• Made up of….Only one kind of
  material and has DEFINATE
  properties.
• Elements are the simplest pure
  substances.
Compounds

• 2 or more elements chemically
  bonded together.
