Inner Workings of a Hearing Aid
Tiny Amplifiers
All hearing aids are, to a certain degree, just
a sophisticated amplifier. With modern digital
technology, these amplifiers can be
customized to create very user specific
output. Very complex computer processing
manipulated via computer by your hearing
healthcare professional can be completed to
customize your hearing instrument to your hearing loss, lifestyle,
and needs. Specific pitches where your hearing loss is worse can
be amplified to a greater extent, while areas where your hearing
is better can me minimally amplified.
Basic parts
Every hearing instrument has a microphone, an amplifier, a
receiver, a battery, and in modern digital hearing products, a
computer chip. Sound is picked up by the microphone located on
the outer casing, and converts that sound into an electric signal.
This signal is then amplified and converted back into sound. The
receiver (speaker) then outputs the louder sound into the ear.
Batteries are required to power the aid, varying in size based on
the type and brand of the instrument. Digital aids also have a
computer chip that allows for increased fine tuning of the sound
before the receiver plays back the sound. All of these things
happen in a matter of seconds!

Limits
Being man-made, even the most advanced hearing instruments
have their limits. None will restore hearing to normal, no matter
how sophisticated the device. While the individual’s hearing can
be improved drastically with an appropriate fit, the sound still has
to pass through the damaged system that is causing the hearing
loss. Eliminating background noise has improved with digital
technology, but is not perfected. You may still experience issues
in very noisy backgrounds, especially if the noise is other people
talking. Ask your hearing healthcare professional about what you
can do to improve hearing in these situations more! Call today
and get your appointment to try out a pair of hearing aids!
