NOTICE TO APPLICANTS FOR THE RENEWAL
                              OF A FIREARM CERTIFICATE
Please find enclosed the following documents to enable you to apply for renewal of your firearm
certificate:

        • An application form.
        • A questionnaire relating to club membership/land usage.
        • Home Office produced leaflet on security of firearms and ammunition.
        • Return envelope for your own use - requiring correct postage.
        • Two Reference forms together with return envelopes – requiring correct postage.

To assist us in processing your application as quickly as possible please ensure that the form is
completed in its entirety, any omissions may result in the application being returned to you and may
cause unnecessary delay. These notes should be read in conjunction with the notes on the reverse of
the application form. If a particular section does not apply please state NOT APPLICABLE.

Please return the completed application form and questionnaire WITHIN 21 DAYS (ideally by
recorded delivery/registered post) together with:

• The fee of £40.00. Cheques/Postal Orders should be made payable to 'Gwent Police'. PLEASE
    DO NOT SEND CASH.

• FOUR (4) identical passport size photographs of yourself taken full face and without a hat. The
reverse of one photograph must be signed by yourself and each of the referees must
endorse a separate photograph (see notes on the reverse of the application form for further
    instructions).

Due to the possibility of delays within the department it is advisable that you retain your firearm
certificate in the interim period whilst your application is being processed, this can be collected at a
later date by one of our Firearms Enquiry Officers or forwarded to our department upon expiry. For
your information should you require a Temporary Permit to be issued beyond the point of your existing
certificate’s expiry date, please contact our office, and a member of staff will gladly arrange this for
you.

No fee is payable if the certificate is to be issued:

• To the responsible officer of a rifle club, miniature rifle club or cadet corps approved by the
    Secretary of State.

• For firearms and ammunition required as part of the signalling equipment of a ship, aircraft or
    aerodrome.

• For slaughtering instruments and ammunition that are held by licensed slaughterers or the owners
of licensed slaughter houses or knackers yards, i.e. persons carrying out the killing of animals as
part of the food chain. PLEASE NOTE THAT A FIREARM CERTIFICATE IS NO LONGER
REQUIRED FOR CAPTIVE BOLT HUMANE KILLERS. Free certificates will no longer be issued
to veterinary surgeons, huntsmen, R.S.P.C.A. officers etc.

After initial administrative enquiries have been completed, an enquiry officer will visit you to discuss
your reason for possessing a firearm and your arrangements for the security of the firearm(s). A leaflet
giving advice on the security of firearms and ammunition is enclosed but you may also seek free
advice from a Crime Prevention Officer who can be contacted through your local police station.

Please answer all questions on the form as fully and as accurately as possible, as it is an offence to
make a statement (incorrect or false) or fail to disclose details requested on the application form. An
incorrectly completed form may be refused without consideration and you would benefit by closely
reading the notes on the reverse of the application form.

Please also include a Mobile Telephone Number and / or E-Mail address if possible, as space for
these is not provided on the application form itself.

All convictions, including motoring offences and conditional discharges, MUST be disclosed
even if you consider they are of a minor nature. You need only include convictions since the
existing certificate was issued. Failure to disclose the information may result in prosecution.
As part of the application process you are required to provide details of two persons prepared to act
as Referees. The Referees may be contacted regarding your application and it is important that you
ensure, before giving their details, that they agree to act in this capacity and that they meet the
requirements laid down in the notes given on the application form. Both Referees are required to
complete Part E of the application form and must endorse the reverse of one photograph. You must
provide each Referee with a ‘Reference Form'; they are then required to complete the form and to
return it directly to this office. The form must not be returned to you.

Should you currently possess a shotgun certificate, may I remind you of the facility whereby you may
renew the shotgun certificate at the same time as applying for this firearm certificate. The shotgun
certificate would be renewed at a reduced cost (£10.00) and both certificates would bear the same
date.

Further advice may be obtained by telephoning the following numbers from Monday to Thursday
08:00 – 17:00 and Friday 08:00 – 16:00. Messages may be left on an answering machine at all other
times and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

                01633 642446
                01633 642447

If you do not wish to renew your certificate please advise this office as soon as possible. If you still
possess firearms or ammunition you may transfer them to a registered firearms dealer, auctioneer, or
current firearm certificate holder who has authority for them or surrender them to your local police for
destruction. You must advise us of any transfer or disposal. Please complete the section overleaf
and return the form together with your certificate for recording and cancellation.

YOU ARE REMINDED THAT IT IS AN OFFENCE TO POSSESS A FIREARM OR AMMUNITION
WITHOUT A CURRENT FIREARM CERTIFICATE.
