The rise of the emoticon.
For over a hundred years, the search has been on to find textual ways of adequately conveying
and expressing a writer's emotions to his intended receiver. The use of emoticons -more
commonly known as 'emotions'- can be traced back to writings of the nineteenth century where
writers used emotions to convey attitude and alert a receiver to the tenor or temper of a statement.
This has helped shape and improve the interpretation that may not have been fully communicated
through the use of the text alone. The emotions were traditionally simplistic and during the early
nineteenth century emoticons were used primarily for humorous effect. One of the earliest finding
for the representation of emotion in text can be found in a transcript from Abraham Lincoln's
speech written in 1862. The text appears to contain a "winking" emotion, however to this day. It is
unclear whether it has actually been employed for that purpose or whether it is a typo or a
legitimate punctuation construction.
For many this is regarded as the birth place of the textual emotion. The development in the
emotion made little progress until September 1982, when computer scientist Scott Fahlman -who
is widely credited for generating the smiley - employed two smileys on a message board in order
to illustrate to his colleagues the differences between serious posts and jokes. Fahlman illustrated
this by a happy smiley face:-) to illustrate the jokes and sad smiley face display serious
information:-(. For the past fifteen years the emoticon, has been used in a number of internet
based sites including MSN messenger, Hotmail, MySpace and the newest edition to the hall of
emoticon fame. The social networking site Facebook which allows users to easily track down long
lost classmates and keep in touch with relatives and friends has no exclusive emoticons or
'winkeys" for its users to utilize. For around a month or two now, I have been searching for
emotions that allow me to express myself in a unique and stylistic way and I have stumbled on a
website that not only offers you emoticons, but offers you shortcuts into adding these excellent
emotions that are specific to Facebook. The facebook smilies are simple and easy to use all you
need to do is copy the coded version of the smiley you wish to use and then paste the code before
the text if you want the emotion to appear before the text or after if you wish it to appear after.
I really hope that this editorial has helped in understanding emoticons and using them on
Facebook, this is a website that has all the codes and shortcuts for Facebook emotions.
