Harbor

 A place on the coast where vessels may find shelter

 protected from rough water by jetties, etc.

Bay

 Part of a sea or lake that extends into the land

Cape

 A point or

head of land

projecting

into a body of

water.

Isthmus

 A narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land

Strait

 Narrow stretch of water than connects two larger bodies of

water

Peninsula



 Area of land almost

completely

surrounded by

water and

connected to the

mainland by an

isthmus

Oasis

 A fertile spot in a desert where water is found.

Mountain Range

 A line of

mountains

connected

by high

ground.

Glacier

 Huge, slow-moving mass of snow and ice

Volcano

 Opening in the

Earth’s surface

through which

molten rock,

ashes, and gasses

from the interior

escape

River

 large natural

stream of water

flowing in a

channel to the

sea, a lake, or

another stream

Cataract

 Large waterfall;

any strong flood

or rush of water

Delta

 Triangular-shaped plain at the mouth of a river, formed when

sediment is deposited by flowing water

Flood Plain

 Broad plain on either side of a river, formed when sediment

settles on the riverbanks.

Tributary

 River or stream that flows into a larger river

Lake

 A large body of water surrounded by land

Hills

 Area that rises above surrounding land and has a rounded

top; lower and usually less steep than a mountain.

Beach

 an expanse of sand or pebbles along a shore

Valley

 A low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with

a river or stream flowing through it

Canyon

 Deep, narrow valley with steep sides; often has a stream

flowing through it.

Basin

 Depression in the surface of the land; some basins are filled

with water

Plateau

 Large, flat area that rises above the surrounding land; at least

one side has a steep slope

Butte

 Small raised area of land with steep sides

Cave

 A large underground chamber, typically of natural origin, in

a hillside or cliff.

Cliffs

 A steep rock face, esp. at the edge of the sea

Mesa

 High, flat topped landform with cliff-like sides, larger than a

butte

Rain Forest

 a forest with heavy annual rainfall.

Swamp

 An area of low-lying ground where water collects

Desert

 A dry, barren area of land, esp. one covered with sand.

Savannah/Prairie

 A large open area of grassland
